Remembering a modeler

This month's column is a collection of member benefits and ideas.

MA Digital Library

Did you know that all issues of Model Aviation since 1975 have been scanned into a searchable digital medium? Articles, reports, even advertisements are available to members. You can research all 450 magazines.

I found it interesting to see the cost of models in the late 1970s when I first entered the hobby. It was also clear that AMA was working to protect our members from government restrictions and regulations even back then.

Check out the MA Digital Library. It is intended to be a benefit for members only.

AMA Insider

The AMA Insider, another membership benefit, is our online publication for club officers, Leader Members, and any AMA member who wants to be in the know. When you subscribe to this free bimonthly digital publication, you will receive an email when the latest edition is available.

It contains interesting articles that aren't published in Model Aviation. Jim Wallen, AMA's District IX vice president (VP), pens a great piece called "Club Corner." In the most recent issue, Jim's article lists seven common-sense ideas about how individuals can strengthen their clubs and improve relations with their communities.

AMA President Bob Brown writes "President to President," again offering ideas. Other recent articles include "A123/LiFe Monitoring" and "Test-Flying a New RC Airplane." This is information that is not in the magazine.

Club business and insurance

Club charters are due March 31, so please check to see that your club's charter renewal has been submitted.

AMA's insurance for the landowner, even if your club owns its own field, is primary protection. This is often a principal reason a landowner will lease a field to a club.

As spring approaches, it is time for clubs to help protect themselves and AMA. Make a thorough risk-assessment inspection of your field and buildings. Look for hazards and potential liability issues. Removing any hazards improves the outcome for all of us.

Lake AMA and the Irwin Cup

Did you know that AMA has owned property with a large pond on it for many years? It is located north of AMA Headquarters in Muncie, Indiana. Through the efforts of AMA Technical Director Greg Hahn, it was developed as a model boat venue called Lake AMA. Not only is Greg a world-class pilot, he is also a big fan of powerboat racing.

On July 13–14, the Muncie Racing Club will host the inaugural Irwin Cup model powerboat race on Lake AMA. There will be four rounds of heat racing featuring popular Nitro and Gas classes under International Model Power Boat Association rules and two classes specifically run for beginner, ready-to-run boats.

Spectators are welcome. Bring a chair and enjoy a day at the lake. Food vendors will be on-site. The race is being held during the Nats.

If you are interested in competing, visit www.modelaircraft.org/files/Irwincupflyer2.pdf for more information.

As an AMA member, you are insured to participate in model boat and RC car activities. This is another benefit of AMA membership.

In memoriam: Harvey Landis

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Harvey Landis. I first met Harvey while running for District II VP six years ago. He was cordial and went out of his way to schedule a club event that allowed me to meet with a number of members of his club.

Harvey was a gentleman whose family was everything to him. He was a full-scale and model aviation enthusiast, and helped his son Richard and grandson Dan Landis become accomplished pilots and modelers. Dan is the Thunder Tiger manager for Hobbico, a Pattern competitor and 3‑D aerobatic pilot, and a former UAV pilot for the military.

Harvey served with the US Army Air Corps, flying in B-29s out of Guam. He was one of our heroes and part of that greatest generation preserving freedom in the world. He was also a member of the Commemorative Air Force.

The last time I saw Harvey was at the 2012 Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology (NEAT) Fair. Although he was in failing health, he was enjoying model aviation with his family and all of us. Harvey Landis was a man we can all aspire to be like, and his absence will be felt. My condolences to the Landis family.

Until next month, help secure our future and take a youngster flying.
