SUMMER is here and the flying is hot! Many good events and a lot of fun — isn’t that what modeling is all about?

I am off to Muncie in a couple of weeks for an Executive Council meeting. One of the big items we are working on is hiring a new Executive Director (ED). We received roughly 60 applications and a committee is working to narrow the field. Hopefully, we will have a new ED on board before the end of the year! Let’s see what events we have to report.

WAAM Warbird Fly-In (From John Russell, Alabama)

I had the opportunity to attend West Alabama Aero Modelers (WAAM) first-ever Warbird Fly-In on April 14, 2006. WAAM plans to make this an annual event, and by the looks of this year’s attendance, it’s going to be a big event for the area.

Scale pilots from across the Southeast came during the Easter weekend to display and fly their scale warbirds. Models of World War I and II aircraft were on display, and the many spectators who came to see this well-advertised event were duly impressed with the level of detail these models had. The pilots who build and fly these models really are master craftsmen.

CD (Contest Director) and event coordinator Frank Baty did an outstanding job running the day’s program. He even arranged for a couple of full-scale aircraft fly-bys that got the crowd excited! The members of WAAM are to be commended for their participation and support of this event. Five club members brought out their warbirds to fly along with 14 who came from out of town.

Best of Show went to Bill Krummel with his AT-6 Texan. Attendees at the event held some surprises as well. Local full-scale airshow pilot Mark Henley (wing pilot of the North American Aeroshell Airshow Team AT-6 Texans) brought his Cub and put on an impressive show.

In the crowd of spectators, Mr. Edward Calevin introduced himself as a former World War II P-51 fighter pilot. Well into his 80s, his memory was still sharp as he entertained attendees with his war stories and the many campaigns he was part of in Italy.

Visit WAAM’s website at www.waam.us for more pictures and information about the club, and please support your local clubs by attending their events! Regional interclub support will help this hobby grow.

Tangerine Pattern Contest

The Tangerine Pattern contest was held April 29–30, 2006. The Remote Control Association of Central Florida (RCACF) hosted this annual classic on its fabulous flying field; a 750-foot north/south runway and 65 acres of open airspace make for great precision flying. CD Steve Homenda did an outstanding job with the contest, as did the pilots managing a 16–20-knot crosswind! These pilots know what they are doing and it shows in their craft. The RCACF staff of helpers kept the weenie wagon open and the burgers were excellent.

I observed another strong showing of electric-powered Pattern aircraft, and as usual Jason Shulman did an outstanding job. His level of commitment to the sport is unique and is reflected in his flying. All these pilots are to be commended for an outstanding performance in the wind!
