District V
Hi, gang! As you read this, a new president and executive vice president for the AMA have been elected, as well as a couple of new district vice presidents (VPs). This demonstrates change, progress, and growth within the hobby.
As a new year approaches, we should be aware of what is going on in our hobby with regard to the FAA, flying fields, and our exposure to the public. This year we will see novel products, new places to fly, and we will inevitably lose some flying sites. We will make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and see some go. This is our life as members of the hobby that is model aviation, and for me, it is wonderful. I hope you also make your hobby wonderful!
Events
The Cape Coral R/C Sea Hawks promoted model aviation at Aviation Day at Page Field in Fort Myers, Florida. The event was sponsored by the Aviation Department of Lee County, Florida. This is how great modeling ambassadors expose the hobby to the general public in a constructive and engaging way.
The Sun Coast Electric Fly-In was sponsored by Manatee County Radio Controllers. Jim Holloman served as the CD. It was a nice event; Jim Holloman and Pablo Fernandez enjoyed it!
Pablo Fernandez Jr., Associate Vice President (AVP), South Florida, sent in photos from the Markham Park Jet Rally, held November 18–20. Glen Grant, a member of the Red Tails 332, served as CD and organizer, and Pablo was the co-CD. There was big participation, and the flightline was open to the public.
What is an AVP?
What an AVP is and does has been discussed during some club meetings I have attended. Here is how the AMA describes the AVP position:
- The AVP must be a Leader Member.
- The AVP is the liaison between the VP and the members in the assigned area.
- The AVP provides periodic reports of activities in his/her assigned area.
- May be selected to represent the district at an Executive Council meeting in the event that the VP is unable to attend. They would have all of the privileges of the VP, with the exception of voting on matters before the Executive Council.
- Travel as directed by the District VP and submit vouchers for reimbursement to the VP for approval.
This is an important and necessary position. It is the medium with which we, the district VPs, can communicate with the membership at large. If you have the desire to serve your AMA membership and are a Leader Member, send me an email. If we need an AVP in your area, I will contact you so we can speak.
Have a great time building, flying, and talking model airplanes!
