Notice — Brimfield Float Fly-In
Twice each year, Don Foster sponsors a floatplane event at Brimfield State Park. As you know, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a financial problem; therefore, there is a question as to whether the park will be available. If there is an answer in time, it will be in next month's column. If not, please call Don Foster or me to see if the event will take place.
East Coast Swamp Flyers — Invite-the-Neighbors Picnic (October 6, 2002)
Dan Fiasconaro, club secretary, sent information and pictures regarding the East Coast Swamp Flyers' annual Invite-the-Neighbors Picnic held Sunday, October 6, 2002. The event took place at the club's flying field for the 11th year in a row.
One of the functions of a Gold Leader Club is involvement with its community. Along with getting together with fellow club members before the long winter, invitations are sent to residents in the surrounding area of the club's flying field. Three hundred thirty invitations went out this year. Turnout was very good, with guests treated to hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, soda, salads, and flying, of course.
Attendees saw many club members flying planes ranging from .5 A to giant-scale warbirds and aerobatic planes. Invited guest Steve Swahn, as always, put on a great performance with his 41% Edge 540. Club members Mark Constiglione and Jim Cyr put on a nice side-by-side display with their giant-scale P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt, respectively.
Last year's event had several Open AMA members getting involved with the younger crowd by having them fly a trainer on the buddy box with the Open members.
This year's event focused on how to get started in the sport of radio control (RC) airplanes and the role of AMA, with a ground display and information table along with new member signups.
With the continued number of people coming to this event, and the dedicated members who make it successful, the club will continue to promote the sport of RC flying and looks forward to next year's event.
Tips (from the Maine Sky Streakers R/C newsletter)
- Why is lightweight filler almost always white? If you want balsa-colored filler, squeeze a used tea bag into the container of filler and mix thoroughly. Repeat until the desired shade is obtained.
- Marking hinges: When using CyA hinges, draw a black line across the middle of the hinge with a marker. This lets you tell if the hinge is being pushed into the wing when you install the aileron. Some hinges can be pushed in so the aileron has only 1/16" of hinge and the rest is in the wing, which is not very strong. If you can't keep the hinge from being pushed into the wing, stick a pin through the middle of the hinge; it will not hurt the hinge.
