NOTICE! Brimfield Float Fly-In: Twice
each year, Don Foster sponsors a floatplane
event at the Brimfield State Park.
As you know, the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts has a financial problem;
therefore, there is a question as to whether
the park will be available. If there is an
answer in time, it will be in next month’s
column, if not please call Don Foster or me
to see if the event will take place.
East Coast Swamp Flyers: Dan Fiasconaro,
club secretary, sent the following
information and pictures to me regarding an
event held October 6, 2002.
“One of the functions of a Gold Leader
Club is to have involvement with its
community. One example of this was the
North Branford, Connecticut East Coast
Swamp Flyers’ annual Invite-the-Neighbors
Picnic held on Sunday, October 6, 2002.
This event was held at the club’s flying field
for the 11th year in a row.
“Along with getting together with fellow
club members before the long winter,
invitations are sent out to residents within
the surrounding area of the club’s flying
field. Three-hundred-and-thirty invitations
went out this year. Turnout was very good
with guests treated to hot dogs, hamburgers,
chicken, soda, salads, and flying, of course.
“Those attending got to see many club
members flying with planes ranging from
1/2A to Giant Scale Warbirds and aerobatic
planes. Invited guest Steve Swahn, as
always, put on a great performance with his
41% Edge 540. Club members Mark
Constiglione and Jim Cyr put on a nice
display of side-by-side flying with their
Giant Scale P-51 Mustang and P-47
Thunderbolt respectively.
“Last year’s event had several Open
AMA members getting involved with the
younger crowd by having them fly a trainer
along with the Open members on the buddy
box.
“This year’s event focused on how to get
started in the sport of Radio Control (RC)
airplanes and the role of AMA, with a
ground display and information table along
with new member signups.
“With the continued number of people
coming to this event, along with the
dedicated members who get involved with
in the success of this event, we will continue
to promote the sport of RC flying and look
forward to next year’s event.”
Lineup at the pits with the aircraft in
waiting.
Neighbors and invited guests had a
chance to get close to the pilots and view
all of the aircraft present.
There was no caption for this photo, so
you will have to supply your own.
Suggestion: a beautiful P-51 waiting its
turn to fly.
Ron and Joan Liska brought their Tiger
Moth and put on a nice Scale flying
performance.
Always putting on an outstanding show,
Steve Swahn masters the torque roll with
smoke on.

powered by a twin-cylinder, 150cc Desert
Aircraft twin-engine.
Everyone anticipated the arrival of fellow
club member Mark Constiglione with his
Pitts Special. We were not disappointed.
The following tips were “borrowed” from
the Maine Sky Streakers R/C newsletter.
Who knows where they “borrowed” them ...
“Why is lightweight filler almost always
white? If you want balsa-colored filler,
squeeze a used tea bag into the container of
filler and mix thoroughly. Repeat until
desired shade is obtained.”
“Marking hinges: When using CyA
hinges, use a marker to draw a black line
across the middle of the hinge. This way
you can tell if the hinge is being pushed
into the wing when you put on the aileron. I
have had some hinges do this and end up
with a sixteenth of an inch in the aileron
and the rest in the wing—not very strong. If
you can’t keep the hinge from being pushed
into the wing, stick a pin through the
middle of the hinge. It will not hurt the
hinge at all.”
