NOTICE: Brimfield Float Fly-In. Twice
each year Don Foster sponsors a floatplane
event at the Brimfield State Park. As you
know, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
has a financial problem, therefore there is a
question as to whether the park will be
available. There is still no decision.
Check with Don Foster at (413) 782-3872
during business hours or with me at (781)
934-6248.
Neil Simpson sent me the following material
about the New England Formula GX Combat
Championships.
The New England Championships held
September 1, 2002, attracted 16 pilots from
five states. This was the 13th annual running
of this very successful Formula GX
happening. The location was Boynton Park in
Worcester, Massachusetts.
Glenn Simpson, Roy Glenn, and Neil
Simpson got off to the best starts all posting
three-cut wins. Matt Stas was just off that
pace posting a two-cut win, while Dick
Sherman and Ken Hargreaves were close
with one-cut, 620-point wins.
Round two started with Glenn Simpson
and Roy Glenn mid-airing late in their match.
In the next match Neil Simpson got a threecut
win over Matt Stas. In the very next
match Dick Sherman and Ken Hargreaves
stayed in the hunt, flying to a 410-point draw.
Right after that Louis Lopez improved his
position greatly with a three-cut win over
Rick Clark. Len Minick also moved into
contention with a two-cut win over Brian
Seymour. At the halfway point it was Neil
Simpson with 1,660 points followed by Louis
Lopez (1,335points), Dick Sherman (1,030
points), Ken Hargreaves (1,030 points),
Glenn Simpson (1,030 points), Matt Stas
(1,025 points), and Len Minick (1,025
points).
Round three started with Louis Lopez
earning a one-cut win over Neil Simpson in a
hard-fought match. In the next match Dick
Sherman got past Glenn Simpson on airtime.
Next, Roy Glenn outdueled Ken Hargreaves
two cuts to one in another very good match.
After that Matt Stas jumped back into the
thick of things with a three-cut win over Len
Minick. Round three also saw Alex Kopka
emerge as a contender, earning a win over
Rick Clark. Going into the final round it was
Louis (1,955 points), Neil (1,860 points),
Matt (1,855 points), Roy (1,755 points), Dick
(1,550 points), with Ken Hargreaves, Alex
Kopka, and Len Minick all within range with
cumulative scores in the 1,400-point range.
The final four flights of the contest would
prove meaningful. In the first of these, Ken
Hargreaves and Len Minick battled to a onecut-
apiece draw. The next match was
between Dick Sherman and Alex Kopka that
unfortunately, ended in a mid-air.
Roy Glenn then matched up against Neil
Simpson. Roy got past Neil three cuts to one
in a match that went wire-to-wire and was
very hard fought. The final match was Matt
Stas and Louis Lopez which ended with an
early mid-air that cost both pilots in the final
standings.
When it all shook out, the top four were
Roy Glenn, Neil Simpson, Louis Lopez, and
Matt Stas. Matt, who had a great day, also
took home the Sportsman gold.
The top four fliers and the sportsman
winner received beautiful awards.
Competitors received a T-shirt to
commemorate their participation in this
annual GX happening. In addition, every
pilot received one of the raffle prizes, which
included Magnum and Thunder Tiger
engines, gift certificates, chicken hopper
tanks, and boxes of wing cores.
GRW Model Products, J&J Sales, The
Corehouse, Hog Heaven Hobbies, and the
Connecticut Ringer Model Airplane Club all
made serious cash or merchandise
contributions.
Thank you to all these great sponsors
from all of us and thank you to all the people
who shared in the judging and to Roy Glenn,
Louis Lopez, and Alex Kopka for making
long trips to participate in this one.
