FOR THE THIRD year the Otis Model
Aero Club sponsored the Otis Giants Air
Show. It was held July 26-27 at the club
field near Otis Air Force Base on Cape
Cod. The weather was great except for the
wind; this presented a slight challenge to
the pilots but provided some comfort for
the spectators.
The drive to the Cape was the real
challenge. All the time I was there nearly
everyone was telling of their experiences
trying to get to the field. In my case I was
in stop-and-go traffic for at least 15 miles,
caused by an accident involving a State
Trooper.
It seems the trooper had been parked in
the break-down lane at 6 a.m. when a car
doing about 90 mph struck her cruiser in
the rear causing severe injuries to her. The
last I knew she was in critical condition.
You know the media; they report on the
story but very seldom provide any follow
up information.
Anyway, I thought that was the cause
for the traffic, but when I returned home
along the same highway the cars going to
the Cape were backed up farther than they
had been that morning.
Jim McCormack was the contest
director (CD) and he had the operation well
organized. With the club members’ help,
everything seemed to go well. Ray Davis
provided the commentary and also did
flight demonstrations with his turbinepowered
aircraft.
This is a good weekend as it gives the
public a positive view of model aviation
and a significant portion of the proceeds
goes to various charities on the Cape.
The following three pictures are from
the 2002 event and the rest are from this
year.
Ray Davis readies his turbine-powered
aircraft for a demonstration flight. Bob
Martin is assisting.
This is a view of the engine installation in
Ray’s aircraft.
Mike Lapierre and his Stearman, enlarged
from Ziroli plans. Powered by a 3W-60
engine, the aircraft has an 89-inch
wingspan and weighs 24 pounds.
This is Bob Johnson and two of his
aircraft, a Fokker D.VII and a Piper Super
Cub.
B.J. Rousso with his aircraft is waiting
his turn to fly.
This is Bob Martin and the Tiger Moth he
flew in the event.
Jack Buckley prepares his Hangar 9
clipped-wing Taylorcraft for the day’s
activities.
This B-25 is by Jeff Nemac of Barnstable,
Massachusetts.
I have to apologize to the gentleman in
this picture. I wrote the information on a
piece of paper that has disappeared. He
built this P-51 and the P-47 in the next
picture and they were beautiful models. If
someone will tell me his name, it will be
included in a future column.
