HAMPSHIRE COUNTY Radio
Controllers: This club is located in the
western portion of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts, north of Westover Air Force
Base. Each year the club has a Scale fly-in.
For the last two years it has been a two-day
affair.
I attended last summer on Sunday,
August 24, and the weather was beautiful
although a bit breezy. This area is hilly and
is quite picturesque. The field is well out in
the open with few houses in the area. It is a
nice, relaxing place in which to fly.
The event is well organized; there is
ample seating for spectators and a
concession stand is available. You should
plan to attend. The event is usually
scheduled approximately the third weekend
in August.
Shown is a view of roughly one-third of
the flightline. One end of the runway is
off to the left. The tree line is quite a way
out and does not seem to bother the
pilots.
Gordie Lauder sent me a newspaper
article that was published in the Republican.
It was a long, well-written piece giving
model aviation and the Hampshire County
Radio Controllers good publicity.
The event coordinator was Mark
Mundie. Thank you Mark and all who
helped with this event for a well-run
operation.
Fran Mitchell is assembling a 1913 Bleriot
II. Built by Doug Waddel and Fran over a
period of 11 years, the model is powered
by a Laser 1.80 twin. Fran was waiting for
Doug to arrive so I didn’t see the aircraft
fly.
Paul Sitler is shown with his father’s Pitts.
Paul is a very good pilot; he and his father
share the airplanes. The Pitts is finished
using the Stits system that produced a
nice, realistic finish.
Bud Chappell and his electric-powered
Stearman. Note the Kraft radio; it’s good
equipment.
Bud works with style.
I do not know what Snoopy is doing on a
German aircraft. I thought he worked for
the Allied Forces.
I have included some pictures from Paul
Gosselin of the Connecticut Dawn Patrol.
Gus Deltwas and Mitch Buckley.
The Scale World War I model in the first
picture looks an English pilot about to
make a landing. The second picture is the
end of the landing.
This is a nice-looking aircraft, but I have
no information about it.
Column Material Request: If you have
material pertaining to any events held in
District I, send it to me as I am running low
on information.
