CARL VOGEL, the president of the
Discover Flying RC club, sent the
following material to me.
“More than 60 pilots and family
members from at least four different clubs
attended the Annual Frost Fly and Chilifest
hosted this year by the Discover Flying
RC Club at our field in Marstons Mills, on
Cape Cod.
“The weather blessed us with sunny
skies, temperatures in the mid-40s and
reasonable winds. The event also drew
many spectators throughout the day, which
added to the number of people present.
“The first official flight of the New
Year was made by Peter Cheney, and so far
there hasn’t been an official first crash. Of
course, chili was the main course of the
day, and we had two kinds this year
brought in by Dick Manning of the Otis
Model Aircraft Club, and Jim Fournier and
Bill Golliff from our club.
“Rick Kopala from our club brought his
portable barbeque grill and cooked up
hotdogs to add to the menu. As always, the
food was great and everyone had plenty to
eat. Thanks go to all of these people who
did the work of preparing the food and
making this event a real winner.
“The pit area was jam packed with
airplanes of all types and sizes. We had
everything from small electrics to .40 gas
burners and the flying was nonstop all day.
The Annual Frost Fly and Chili-fest was a
magnificent success.
“It’s always great to see everyone there,
especially our friends from all of the other
clubs. We are glad to welcome them to our
field and always enjoy flying with them.
“The Discover Flying RC Club Frost
Fly and Chili-fest is an annual event that is
sponsored jointly with the Otis Model Aero
Club and always held on January 1. It has
been going on for more than 20 years.
“The site of the event alternates
annually between our field and the Otis
club’s field. It was never initially promoted
by either club and the turnout was sparse at
best for many years. Usually only a handful
of dedicated club members who were
willing to brave the usually extreme cold
attended. The past two times it has been at
Discover Flying’s field it has been
promoted vigorously, and the attendance
has grown accordingly.
“Next year the event is sponsored by the
Otis club at its field in Falmouth,
Massachusetts, so make plans now. Mark
your calendars and don’t let anyone try to
talk you out of it. You don’t want to miss
it.”
The three pictures above are from the
chili-fest. Note the nice clear skies but
also the heavy jackets. At least there was
no snow on the ground.
Brimfield Float Fly: There is no definite
word yet, but Don Foster is planning to
have it if the Commonwealth allows it. It
probably will be a late decision as it was
last year.
State of Maine Scale Shoot-Out: Do you
enjoy seeing good flying? Do you like a
good Saturday evening barbeque? If you
do, make plans to attend this event
scheduled August 7-8, 2004, in New
Gloucester, Maine.
Discover Flying RC Club: This club is
hosting a swap meet on May 12, 2004, at
the Barnstable Fire Department station
house. The address is 3249 Main Street,
Route 6A, Barnstable Village, MA. The
event starts at 7:30 p.m. If you want more
information, the club’s Web site is
www.discoverflying.org.
Elections: This year is election year for
the District I Vice President. There should
be time enough for you to get a
nomination in.
Bridgewater Scale Contest: Bob
Mandeville sent the following article to
me. There is not space enough for all the
pictures ao more will be shown next
month.
“The South Shore Radio Control Club
of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, held its
annual Scale contest on August 17, 2003.
There were 17 airplanes registered despite
threatening skies—a better showing than
even the 2002 event. The field was divided
into seven ARF and 10 kit/scratch-built
airplanes participating.
“Despite the overcast skies, all the
pilots were able to get in one flight to
qualify for prizes. With rain threatening to
close down the remainder of contest, CD
Hank Iltzsch elected to end the contest
early rather than requiring pilots to risk
their highly detailed Scale models to the
elements. Normally, this is a two-round
contest.
“Final results were tabulated, and
prizes handed out just before Mother
Nature intervened with rain.
“There were two separate categories,
one for ARF-style airplanes and another
for kits and scratch-built items. Hank has
been rebuilding the contest for the past
two years and it is a work in progress.
He’s taking notes and improving it every
year.
“The contest was fairly popular and
highly regarded in the area. Despite the
threatening rain, more than 60 spectators
showed up to look over the field of entries.
The food stand kept everyone well fed,
especially with the reasonable prices.
“Photos of the contest and some of these
beautiful Scale models can be found on the
club’s Web site at www.ssrcc.org.”
