District I Report - 2004/08

Author: Don Krafft

Edition: Model Aviation - 2004/08
Page Numbers: 154

THIS MONTH I’ll share some pictures
from last year’s State of Maine Scale
Shootout. (I realize that I said that there
would be pictures from the 495th Scale
Show, however I said probably.)
Perhaps these pictures will inspire you to
attend this year’s event. The date is August
7-8, 2004, and the location is New
Gloucester, Maine. For more information,
call Ray and Robin’s Hobby Shop, (207)
797-5196.
Rosalie Marin, the SkyStreakers R/C
Club secretary, provided most of the
following pictures. I’ll have the results of
the contest and more pictures next month.
Ed Estabrook’s Cessna 182 Skylane has a
wingspan of 81 inches, weighs 17 pounds,
and features onboard starting, a full
lighting system, and adjustable in-flight
mixture control.
Jim Gleason’s P-40.
This is Lloyd Roberts and his custom
Lockheed Vega. Lloyd handcrafted
everything except the tires and propeller.
The model’s wingspan is 82 inches and it
weighs 15 pounds.
Nik Rende’s 1/4-scale Sig Piper J-3 is
modeled after Bob Weymouth’s Flying
Farmer aircraft, which is on display at the
Owls Head Transportation Museum. The
Cub’s wingspan is 105 inches and it
weighs 14 pounds.
Tom Chabot’s Great Planes Stuka has
functioning speed brakes and bomb drop.
There are 11 servos onboard.
This is Bill Curliss and I believe that is
Peter Nesbeda helping him. The aircraft is
a WACO YMF-5 powered by an Enya 1.20.
The model has a 72-inch wingspan and
weighs 17 pounds.
Charlie and Lynda Nelson prepare
Charlie’s WACO for another flight.
Powered by a seven-cylinder Seidel
engine, the wingspan is 93 inches and the
model weighs 32 pounds. The aircraft
took 1,600 hours to build.
Mac McLaughlin and his 1929 American
Eagle. The aircraft’s wingspan is 76
inches, it weighs 11 pounds, and a
Magnum .20 four-stroke engine provides
the power.
Tom Derby and his Piper J-3.
Some of the aircraft in the pit area.
Toby Guimond’s 1/4-scale Champion
Citabria has a wingspan of 106 inches and
weighs 14 pounds.
