MORE AMA CLUBS in District I are
recognizing the advantage of partnering
with other area clubs to sponsor events and
activities. These partnerships work well for
small clubs that can now share the cost,
time, and work of putting on an event. The
following report came from Jane Walker,
the vice president of the Northeast R/C
Model Club.
“On Saturday, June 27, under a low
ceiling, the Northeast R/C Model Club and
the Cape Ann R/C Club sponsored the
Second Annual Plum Island Aerodrome
R/C Flying Demonstration at the Plum
Island Airport in Newburyport,
Massachusetts. Despite the weather, pilots
from several area clubs and many spectators
came out to enjoy the events of the day.
“A committee comprised of event
coordinator Ken Cook, Contest Director
Don Dodier, Harry Reifel, Ted Wojcik, and
Ken and Jane Walker worked with airport
manager Steve Noyes to be sure the day
went smoothly.
“In addition to the host clubs, pilots and
modelers representing the R.C. Aces, the
495th R/C Squadron, and the 107th R/C
Flyers participated in the day’s events.
AMA Associate Vice President Bob
Kilmon represented the AMA. Proceeds
from the day benefited the historic Plum
Island Aerodrome, museum, and airport.
“Herb Cotterly displayed a beautiful
Space Walker. Ken Cook showed his
exceptional PT-17 Stearman. Ted Kulik
brought his scale Sopwith Pup.
“During the day, many modelers
impressed the crowd with some
spectacular flying. Northeast member
Naeder Mourao flew a 30% Yak equipped
with smoke and a Spectra-G helicopter.
Cody Wojcik flew his 40% Carden Extra
to music. John Backhaus flew a 35%
Aeroworks Extra 260 and a Great Planes
Big Stik. Raja Boltlosh flew an X-Cell
gas-powered helicopter with an onboard
generator.
“495th member, Bob Michaud, got the
crowd’s attention with his Shock Jet jet
trainer that had a flame-out, which he was
able to safely land. Paul DiNoto of the Cape
Ann club flew some less-conventional
models of his own design, including a
flying flag. Neil Robinson from the R/C
Aces made a realistic scale flight with his
Balsa USA ¼-scale Fokker Dr.I triplane.
“Spectators were given the opportunity
to try their hands at flying with the use of a
buddy box and help of instructor Cody
Wojcik.
“With effort, planning, and cooperation,
two small clubs pulled off a big event. This
type of show promotes the hobby and makes
each club stronger because it recognizes the
various talents of their members.
“We are already planning and looking
forward to next year. Now, if we could only
order some sun…”
