Youth Recognition Feature
Our future lies in our youth. We all say this and it is true. I would like to start a new feature where our young modelers who are involved with their clubs in helping to promote our hobby are recognized. One doesn't have to be a world-class pilot to qualify. Send me a photo and a brief description of your candidates for inclusion in this column.
Museum Outreach (MOST)
Associate Vice President (AVP) Peter Seiffert reported that he, Jim Mirra, and the Syracuse Thunderbird Aero Radio Society (STARS) are engaged with the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST). When the museum opened a new Flight & Space exhibit and invited 50 children ages 10–14 and their parents to spend the night at the museum, the modelers were invited to help.
Everyone enjoyed the IMAX OmniTheater movie The Magic of Flight. After the movie, Jim and Peter went to the Flight & Space area to talk to the guests about RC airplanes and helicopters. They brought three airplanes and two helicopters and demonstrated how they work and fly.
After the workshop, the guests were allowed to fly mCX helicopters. This event was so successful that they were asked to participate with MOST once each month. What a great way of reaching out to the youngsters of Syracuse, New York.
Heli Training Night
Concerning helicopters, Peter and the STARS also started Heli Training Night and it has really taken off. It has helped STARS increase its membership and brought the club closer together.
Don Post — Historical Recognition
Ray Mangin sent an article written by Ocean County Modelers, Inc. newsletter editor Susan Fevola. The information for the article was provided by club member Hob Davis concerning the late Don Post.
In 1950, 18-year-old Don Post, competing for the first time in the Nats, won the Team Racing Perpetual Trophy! Hob Davis also took fourth in the Stunt Jet Speed category.
Hob successfully spearheaded an effort to have Don Post's winning aircraft accepted by the AMA National Model Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana. This has become one of the historical attractions at the museum. Thanks and congratulations to Hob and the Ocean County Modelers for sharing part of model aviation's history with the world!
Final Flight
Gary Rosenthal sent a note that Al Iammacone, longtime member of the Richmond Model Flying Club, has passed away. Our condolences go out to his family, club members, and many friends.
Franklinville R/Cers
I started the column talking about youth and I will leave you with a photo I took when I popped in at the Franklinville R/Cers field on a Friday evening. Bob Means was there, instructing adults and youth combined. Want your club to grow? This is how you do it!
District II Fun Fly
Don't forget, the District II Fun Fly is September 25 at Floyd Bennett Field and is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Avenue Radio Control Society.
Until next month, Keep 'em Three in the Green.
