District II

Gary Fitch, District II Vice President

It is always a pleasure to acknowledge our Leader Clubs when they achieve milestones. This year we have two Gold-level Leader Clubs that are celebrating five years in this capacity:

  • Aero Radio Club of Syracuse
  • Syracuse Thunderbirds

Congratulations to all of the members for being involved in this worthwhile program.

Events and Reports

Associate Vice President (AVP) Ray Juschkus and I attended the Whitman Flyers' second annual Electric Fun-Fly, held at the Bethpage Polo Grounds in Bethpage, NY. Ray reported that it was a tremendous success with 71 registered pilots and more than 187 models present by 11 a.m. — that's 30 more fliers than last year. Plans are already in the works for next year's event.

On Sunday, June 27, Ray attended two events:

  1. RC Society of Marine Park Fun-Fly

Ray attended the first fly-in at Marine Park. This club has been in existence since 1968 and has a very private flying field tucked away in the marshes of Brooklyn, New York, just off Garritsen Avenue. The club consists of a number of friendly guys who want to help beginners. President Jose Pete Maldonado is the force behind this great group. If you are ever in the neighborhood, bring a plane and fly with this fine group of pilots.

  1. Nassau Flyers' Fifth Annual Heli Fly-In at Lufbery Aerodrome, Cedar Creek Park, Long Island

It was a perfect day for an event. As Ray approached the field, he saw a full-scale helicopter from the Nassau County Police Department parked on the runway. The crew was walking around talking with the model heli pilots. Archie Defendini was responsible for the police attending the meet. Ray spoke with CD Ilan Nahoom and his assistant, Ken Casser, who told him that 33 pilots registered for the heli meet.

Thanks to Ray for being an active AVP!

All district members need to become aware of our work with the FAA. Please pay close attention to the information that AMA President Dave Mathewson sends out about what AMA is doing. We may very well need everyone's help in working to protect our right to fly in the national airspace.

Until next month, help secure our future and take a youngster flying!
