November 2004 151
As this month’s edition of Model Aviation
reaches your door, the annual AMA
District II Fly-In will be only a week or
two away. Things are coming together
nicely, and if we can catch a break with the
weather, it should be a great weekend.
The Jersey Coast Radio Control Club
(JCRCC) will host this year’s Fly-In with
Joe Mosso as the CD. The event will be
held at the JCRCC field in Wall Township,
New Jersey, on October 2-3, 2004. For
more information you can visit the JCRCC
Web site at www.jerseycoastrcclub.com. I
hope to see many of you there.
You may remember that a few months ago
I wrote about the opportunity we had in
District II to listen to Maynard Hill, the man
behind the successful transatlantic flight of
an RC model, describe his modeling career
and the events that led up to his recordsetting
accomplishment. It was truly a great
experience.
For some of us in the eastern part of our
district, the opportunity is presenting itself
again. Maynard will be lecturing at the New
England Air Museum in Windsor Locks,
Massachusetts, at 7 p.m. on October 20,
2004. If you decide to make the trip, I can
guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.
The Canandaigua Chiefs held the first of
what the members hope will be an annual
fly-in and airshow on July 17-18, 2004. For
a first-year event, the weekend went
extremely well.
Competing against the Blue Angels
Airshow Team in nearby Rochester didn’t
help the attendance of the public on
Saturday but modelers from several
surrounding clubs were there in force to
support the Chiefs.
Lynn Bowerman (R) prepares to taxi Greg
Covey’s Hangar 9 Corsair for takeoff. The
model is a glow-to-electric conversion
done by Greg and it really flew well.
The Chiefs moved to the club’s current
location slightly more than a year ago and
the club’s efforts are quickly turning its field
into one of the nicest facilities in the district.
Trevor Ewell begins to fire up the four
Saito .91 four-strokes on this 41-pound,
144-inch-wingspan B-17 G owned by Tom
Forsythe (standing over the tail) while Joe
Somers and Rich Brook look on. This
model was clearly the crowd favorite. It
flew and sounded great.
The Jersey Coast Sport Fliers (JCSF) is one
of the most proactive clubs in our district
when it comes to community relations. The
mmbers have flown out of Colts Neck’s
Dorbrook Park for approximately 15 years
and have established an outstanding
relationship with the park management.
On July 21, 2004, JCSF presented the
Monmouth County Park System with a
waterproof, portable defibrillator and a
$1,000 check made out to Friends of the
Park. The check will be used toward funds
being raised for the Mount Mitchell Park
(Highlands) 9-11 Memorial Fund.
Stan Berger (center), Jersey Coast Sport
Fliers (JCSF) president, presents a $1,000
check to Michelle Spears, Friends of the
Parks Executive Director, and James
Gray, co-chairman of the Monmouth
County 9-11 Memorial Committee, during
the Monmouth County Fair’s opening
ceremonies on Flight Night.
Funds for the portable defibrillator, as
well as the Friends of the Park donation
were raised because of the efforts of JCSF
club members that began last year. In the
past, the JCSF has displayed community
involvement that includes fundraising
activities for multiple sclerosis, the Rainbow
Foundation, and an Adopt-a-Road cleaning
effort.
In the words of JCSF president Stan
Berger, “We do more than fly. Jersey Coast
Sport Fliers gives back to the community.”
In addition to presenting the defibrillator
and the 9-11 memorial check, JCSF
showcased various RC model airplanes on
opening day of the Monmouth County Fair.
Fair attendees had a chance to try their hand
at a computer simulator that was located at
the JCSF fair site.
Stan Berger (R), JCSF president,
presents a waterproof, portable
defibrillator to Edward Loud, Chairman
of the Monmouth County Board of
Recreation Commissioners.
What’s your club doing to build strong
relationships in your community?
See you next time.
