Report

The AMA Executive Council will be participating in a strategic planning meeting in February to create an agenda and a set of short-term and long-term goals for our organization. Those of you who frequent our District II Web site forum or are members of our district e-mail list know that I am looking for your input to take with me to this meeting. What is AMA doing right? What could AMA be doing better? Are there any specific areas you think we should be focusing on in the coming years? If you have ideas or suggestions, I’d like to hear them.

One of the benefits of belonging to a club is the camaraderie shared by its members. Events such as monthly meetings, annual dinners, and year-end picnics are all a part of the club experience.

Frank Mackie sent the following about his club’s recent picnic:

“On October 31, 2004, the South Jersey Radio Control Club (SJRCC), based in Bridgeton, New Jersey, held its first annual Halloween picnic and open-flying event. The event was open to anyone who wished to join us for a day of flying and good eats.

“Roughly 30 fliers turned out for the event. Although the sun was shining brightly and the temperature was great, Mother Nature tried to foil us with very gusty winds. Many pilots took to the sky in spite of the windy conditions. The airplanes were a handful to keep under control but we still managed to get in a good day of flying.

“Those who chose not to brave the wind had a good time at the buffet enjoying the free food and drink provided by the club. Young and old, male and female, everyone had a good time.”

Jim Lewis, one of District II’s associate vice presidents, made his usual rounds of the New York North Country and wrote about his trip to Plattsburg.

“The weather was cool and damp but that didn’t stop the Plattsburg Radio Aeromodelers from doing their thing. On June 12–13, 2004, the club held a Charity Fun-Fly. The beneficiary was the local hospice.

“There were several dozen pilots who kept the flying going nonstop for both days. Other activities included a parachute-jump exhibition.

“The club generated funds by collecting a donation at the gate and running a food concession. When the weekend concluded, the club was able to present a check to the hospice for more than $1,000.”

By now most of you probably know that AMA has a new Executive Director. Don Koranda, former president of the National Aeronautic Association, came aboard in December to fill the large shoes left by Joyce Hager. For decades Joyce has been an asset to AMA and will continue to play an important role in the organization. That, coupled with the wealth of talent Don brings to the table, should mean a bright future for AMA.

The annual Westchester Radio Aero Modelers (WRAM) Show is scheduled for February 25–27, 2005. At this time Don plans to attend. He will be spending much of his time in the AMA booth and will attend the District II meeting held Saturday afternoon. If you have time, stop by to meet and speak with him.

The fourth annual District II Fly-In is tentatively scheduled for sometime in September 2005 in the Saranac Lake region of New York. As soon as the details are finalized they will be posted on District II’s Web site calendar.

See you next time.
