District II Report - 2009/12

Holiday Greeting

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Another year is almost in the books and I want to thank our associate vice presidents (AVPs), district webmaster, contest coordinators, safety coordinator, frequency coordinator, and contest board members. We are all AMA volunteers and without your help we wouldn't be able to function!

Somerset Signal Senders — Fifth Annual Flight Day (Camp Okee Sunokee)

AVP Tony Rossi sent this report about the Somerset Signal Senders R/C Club–sponsored Fifth Annual Flight Day at Camp Okee Sunokee. Tony wrote:

"Sharing one's joys and experiences with others is one of those priceless things in life, and so it was for the Somerset Signal Senders on Monday, July 20, 2009, when representatives of our club shared highlights of our hobby with about 40 kids at Camp Okee Sunokee. The Signal Senders were represented by:

  • Jim Vigani
  • David Shields
  • Chris DeBlass
  • Ken Hoeg
  • Paul Brill
  • Stu Goodman
  • Larry Forni
  • Tony Rossi

"Camp Okee Sunokee is a Somerset County Park Commission program, conducted in the headquarters building adjoining our flying field in Bridgewater, New Jersey. We were welcomed by Lee Shahay and about 40 children ranging in age from six to 13. To say that all of the children had a great time would be an understatement. Their faces reflected how much they liked our presentation.

"Ken Hoeg did a superb job narrating the PowerPoint presentation while Jim Vigani and Chris DeBlass handled the sticks on the flight simulator. Their flying skills brought out a lot of oohs and aahs from the audience. They particularly liked how the airplane shattered when Jim crashed it. Everything was projected on a huge flat-screen TV for all to enjoy.

"Ken used Chris's Sig Fazer to show everybody how the control surfaces of an airplane actually move in response to the transmitter inputs. After the presentation, the kids were given balsa gliders to assemble in the classroom and then went outside for the test flights. All the helpers and the Somerset volunteers had their hands full showing the Okee kids how to throw the gliders. Success! Every child had a good flight.

"Jim Vigani and Chris DeBlass gave a spectacular flight demo with Jim's electric plane and Chris's electric helicopter. The kids really loved the rolls and loops with the helicopter and the hovering plane.

"Working with Camp Okee Sunokee and the Somerset Park Commission is another example of how we, as a club, can bring a little sunshine into the life of another."

What more can be said? Special thanks to the Somerset Signal Senders for an exceptional effort promoting model aviation to our youth!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Walt's Hobby Shop in Syracuse, New York, which finished first in the USA in AMA's Dealer-to-Dealer Membership Drive. Bruce and Walt Throne have always been outstanding promoters of our hobby and AMA, and this award proves it. Thanks for your continuing efforts!

Closing

Here's hoping you get everything you need and most of what you want this holiday season! Till next month, keep 'em "Three in the Green."
