Volunteer Expertise Database
Club presidents have contacted me asking for a contact at the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) or where they can connect with a respected botanist. This is to gain access to a flying field or to assist in protecting a club’s assets or field. It is a powerless feeling wanting to assist but lacking the human resources to do so.
As part of AMA’s Strategic Long Range Plan, I am asking our members who are, or who know and may have influence with, a local, regional, or state politician, judge, DEC manager, botanist, wildlife expert, legal or medical expert, etc., to please send me an e-mail.
Our goal is to develop a database of members who can be called on to lend expertise and influence as volunteers for the betterment of our hobby in this district. This list will be retained by me and the AMA HQ and you would only be called on as a need develops.
We need your help, so please send me an e-mail with the resource contact information in addition to your own.
Canandaigua Sky Chiefs
The Canandaigua Sky Chiefs is one of those great clubs you don’t hear much about. The members have a perfect field, are friendly and active, and put on a well-attended annual auction. They generally host three flying events each summer, attend other clubs’ events, and are strong AMA supporters.
The club participates in the Central New York Chapter and has a Nats Pattern Champion, Ken Velez, among its members. Ken will CD the Chiefs’ first annual Pattern meet on June 5-6, 2010. On June 12-13, the club will host its annual air show, and the Dick Parshall Memorial Float Fly is scheduled for September. Check the club’s website for more information.
Safety Reminder (from Al Kanser, District II Safety Coordinator)
“I am writing this in March in anticipation of the upcoming flying year. I’d like to address the responsibilities of the Contest Directors at the various events we have coming up this year in respect to safety.
“It isn’t enough that you complete a sanction application for your club’s annual event; you should also take the time to become familiar with the AMA Safety Code and enforce it at your air show!
“Some clubs are appointing flightline officers to aid in the enforcement of the rules. In the long run, everyone will learn the proper way to do things at an event and not only will they enjoy themselves, they will take a positive attitude toward safety back to their home clubs.”
AMA Ambassador
Hoot Gibson, former Space Shuttle astronaut, AMA Life Member, and lifelong modeler, has just become an AMA Ambassador. I would like to thank Hoot for joining our team and helping promote model aviation to our nation!
Until next month, Keep 'em Three in the Green!
