National Aeromodeling Championships

I want to extend special thanks to Ron Morgan and his staff for producing another National Aeromodeling Championships. These people spend a great many thankless hours producing the world's largest model airplane competition.

Mad River Flying Association — "Come Fly With Us"

On June 24, the Mad River Flying Association (MRFA) held its sixth annual Come Fly With Us event. This event is open to the public and offers buddy-box flying to everyone free of charge.

The club provided demonstrations of:

  • Electric and nitro airplanes
  • Helicopters
  • RC trucks

MRFA also gave away a new RTF (ready-to-fly) airplane. Ed Noble of Nikitis Aircraft added to the excitement with two candy drops of approximately three pounds of candy each for the children in attendance.

The event received media coverage, including a live radio broadcast from the flying site. Radio and newspaper personalities took the controls as well, which created excitement on the air.

MRFA has been a chartered club for nearly 12 years and recently obtained Gold Leader Club status with the AMA. The club involves the public and schools whenever possible. Currently there are roughly 40 members; the club offers flight instruction to all who approach and guides newcomers to wise choices when entering the hobby.

MRFA maintains an extensive website at www.flyurbana.com to aid newcomers and keep the membership informed. A special thanks is extended to Dave Millner for the information and pictures.

Miami Valley Radio Control Club — Seniors Appreciation Luncheon

Associate Vice President Jim Martin attended the Seniors Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, June 10, 2006, hosted by the Miami Valley Radio Control Club (MVRCC) in Lebanon, Ohio. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the Warren County Airport to benefit residents of the Otterbein Retirement Community.

Details:

  • The club provided food and drinks; the airport provided hangar space for approximately 250 residents.
  • Weather included wind, rain, and cool temperatures, which eventually curtailed flying.
  • Local pilots gave airplane rides to 80 seniors before the weather made flying impossible.
  • Several club members provided models for a static display that prompted many comments and memories from residents, several of whom had served in World War II as bomber or fighter pilots.

The club leases its flying field from the Otterbein Foundation and tries to do as many community-service activities for the residents as possible throughout the year. This luncheon was one way for the club to say thank you to the workers and residents at the Otterbein Retirement Community.

AMA All Season Patch Program

The AMA All Season Patch program provides year-round activity for clubs. The Black Sheep Squadron of Northeastern Pennsylvania participates in the program with great enjoyment. One of its members, Bill Coffay, has a fleet of helicopters to suit his needs.
