MODEL AVIATION
I WANT TO extend special thanks to Ron
Morgan and his staff for producing another
National Aeromodeling Championships.
These people spend a great many thankless
hours producing the world’s largest model
airplane competition.
On June 24, the Mad River Flying
Association (MRFA) held its sixth annual
Come Fly with Us event. This event is open
to the public, offering buddy-box flying to
everyone free of charge every year.
The club provided demonstrations of
electric and nitro airplanes, helicopters, and
RC trucks. MRFA gave away a new RTF
airplane! Ed Noble of Nikitis Aircraft added
to the excitement of the day with two candy
drops of approximately 3 pounds of candy
each to the kids in attendance.
The event received media coverage and a
live radio broadcast from the flying site.
Radio and newspaper personalities took the
controls as well which created excitement on
the radio!
MRFA has been a chartered club for
nearly 12 years and recently obtained Gold
Leader Club status with the AMA. The club
involves the public and schools when ever
possible. Currently there are roughly 40
members and the club offers flight
instruction to all who approach them and
guide newcomers to wise choices entering
the hobby.
MRFA maintains an extensive Web site
at www.flyurbana.com to aid newcomers
and keep the membership informed. A
special thanks is extended to Dave Millner
for the information and pictures.

Associate Vice President Jim Martin
attended the Seniors Appreciation Luncheon
on Saturday, June 10, 2006, hosted by the
Miami Valley Radio Control Club
(MVRCC) in Lebanon, Ohio. The luncheon
was in conjunction with the Warren County
Airport to benefit the fine people from the
Otterbein Retirement Community.
The club provided the food and drinks
and the airport provided the hangar space for
approximately 250 of the residents. The
weather did not cooperate very well with
wind, rain, and cool temperatures, but local
pilots gave airplane rides to 80 seniors
before the weather finally became too rainy
to continue flying.
Several club members provided their
models for a static display that drew many
nice comments or memories from the
residents. Many of the residents served in
World War II and some were pilots flying
either bombers or fighters. It was great to
hear their stories.
The club leases its flying field from the
Otterbein Foundation so they try to do as
many community-service activities for the
residents as possible throughout the year.
This was just one way for the club to say
thank you to all of the workers and residents
at the Otterbein Retirement Community.
Some of the MVRCC airplanes were on
display for the audience.
The seniors enjoyed the activities.
The AMA All Season Patch program
provides activity for clubs during the entire
year. The Black Sheep Squadron of
Northeastern Pennsylvania participates in
the program with a great deal of enjoyment.
One of its members, Bill Coffay, has a fleet
of helicopters to suit his needs.
