District III - 2010/11
Open House — August 15, 2010
On August 15, 2010, the Corsair Model Aircraft Club (CMAC) held an Open House at the club’s new field in Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio. We wanted to thank all who helped and supported us in our long quest to find a new field. The community response was very good.
Attendance and guests
- Announcements through local newspapers, the club’s e-mail alert system, and the club Web site resulted in a very nice turnout.
- Special guests included the landowner Jim Ellsworth, his wife, and their daughters.
Field and flying area
The club is leasing a former golf driving range from Mr. Ellsworth to use as a takeoff and landing area, and flies over the adjoining former golf course, also owned by the family.
Demonstrations and displays
Club Vice President Thom Buchnell explained some of the more exotic offerings, including a hexacopter owned by Mike Ebner. Flight demonstrations by club members continued all day to the delight of the crowd.
Among the many demos was Dave Miller’s Boomerang Sprint jet. Dave is currently the only club member flying a jet as well as several 3-D helicopters.
Ground School and training
Another popular feature was the “Ground School” tent, featuring three laptops running flight simulators (RealFlight G3.5 and 4.5). These simulators are a key part of our training program and are offered free to new pilots every Tuesday evening during the spring–summer flying season.
Field acquisition and support
The search for and acquisition of this flying field was a long story with many ups and downs. The AMA, AMA Vice President Bob Brown, AMA President Dave Mathewson, and the entire AMA staff were there every step of the way to help make this happen.
