THE JACKSON COUNTY Aeromodelers
hosted the Ohio Valley US Scale Masters
Qualifier on July 23-25, 2010. The site for
this event was the beautiful Jackson County
Airport located in Millwood, West Virginia.
This was the first time a scale event of
this magnitude had been flown in West
Virginia in many years. The event had an
excellent turnout with several first-time
scale fliers attending along with many
veteran pilots from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio,
and West Virginia.
Friday was a practice and static judging
day with actual flying competition beginning
Saturday and concluding Sunday. The
weather played havoc on Saturday, reaching
record highs of 96-plus degrees. Sunday was
beautiful until a noontime rain storm put an
end to all flying for the rest of the day.
CD Larry Fulk and assistant CD Chuck
Westfall put on an exceptional event that
was enjoyed by all who attended. Beautiful,
laser-engraved, wood plaques and trophies
were awarded to participants from first to
third places and a special best-of-show
model was also awarded.
At the awards ceremony, Chuck Westfall
told all in attendance that the Jackson
County Aeromodelers and the Jackson
County Airport have agreed to host this
event for the next 10 years. It is great to see
this kind of cooperation between a model
club and a full-scale airport.
Judging from the participation in this
first event, I believe it will become the
premier scale event not only in West
Virginia but in surrounding states in the
coming years.

The 2010 National Competition Fun Fly
Association’s (NCFFA) Fun Fly Nationals
was held August 14 and15 at the home of
the Blue & Gray Miniature Aircraft
Squadron near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Contestants came from New Mexico,
Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Pilots battled for
the top honors in each of the following
classes: Unlimited, Fun-Fly, and Magic.
Each class had two levels: Masters for the
experienced and Sportsman for the beginner.
The top pilots in each class were:
Unlimited Class: 1) David Grantham; 2)
Steve Luchaco; 3) Chuck Andraka; 4) Jeff
Black; 5) Dan Luchaco.
Fun Fly Masters: 1) Steve Luchaco; 2)
David Grantham; 3) Jeff Black; 4) Chuck
Andraka; 5) Ryan Evans.
Fun Fly Sportsman: 1) Steve Arnold; 2)
Kyle Brown; 3) Mike Brown.
Magic Class: 1) David Grantham; 2) Bob
(Rocky) Rachau; 3) Ryan Evans; 4) Steve
Arnold; 5) Aaron Conroy.
Battle of Champions: 1) Steve Luchaco; 2)
David Grantham; 3) Chuck Andraka.
Putting on a contest of this magnitude
takes a lot of hard work and we would like
to thank all the club members who gave
their support for the whole weekend. Thanks
to Associate Vice President Jeff Black for
the NCFFA information.
The NCFFA winners.
On August 15, 2010, the St. Clairsville RC
Flyers in Ohio held its first annual Junior
Aviator Day for area youth. Scouts, Big
Brothers/Big Sisters, 4-H, and area church
youth groups were invited to a day of fun
and learning.
Club members flew many demonstration
flights, showing all types of airplanes from
trainers to 3-D models. The flying lawn
mower was a big hit.
The young aviators were taught how
airplanes fly and got to try out one of two
flight simulators. Many kids received their
first flight with an instructor.
The public’s comments were positive so
the club will plan a bigger event next year.
The club wishes to thank John Dutton and
Capstone Holding Company of Bannock for
the use of the flying field.
