Event

The Jackson County Aeromodelers hosted the Ohio Valley US Scale Masters Qualifier on July 23–25, 2010. The site for the event was the Jackson County Airport in Millwood, West Virginia.

Participation

This was the first time a scale event of this magnitude had been flown in West Virginia in many years. The event had an excellent turnout, with several first-time scale fliers attending along with many veteran pilots from surrounding states:

  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Ohio
  • West Virginia

Schedule

  • Friday: Practice and static judging
  • Saturday: Flying competition began (continued into Sunday)
  • Sunday: Flying continued until a noontime rainstorm ended flights for the day

Weather

Saturday reached record highs of 96-plus degrees, which affected operations. Sunday started beautifully but was cut short by the afternoon rainstorm.

Organizers and awards

Contest Director (CD) Larry Fulk and assistant CD Chuck Westfall organized an exceptional event enjoyed by all who attended. Beautiful laser-engraved wood plaques and trophies were awarded to participants in first through third places, and a special Best-of-Show model was also recognized.

At the awards ceremony, Chuck Westfall announced that the Jackson County Aeromodelers and the Jackson County Airport have agreed to host this event for the next 10 years—a strong example of cooperation between a model club and a full-scale airport.

Outlook

Judging from the participation in this first event, the author believes it will become the premier scale event not only in West Virginia but in the surrounding states in the coming years.
