FRANK GRANELLI provided the
following great information.
“Mall shows are ideal opportunities for
local model aircraft clubs and individual
modelers to demonstrate to the public just
what model aviation is all about. On
Saturday, April 9, the Harris Hill Lift Over
Drag RC Club (HHLD) made the most of
such an opportunity at the very busy Arnot
Mall in Horseheads, New York. The club
had secured the Central Hub location at the
largest shopping area within 70 or more
miles and made the most of it.
“Many club members, plus pilots from
other local clubs, displayed more than 20
aircraft and spent more than six hours
working with the thousands of mall
shoppers who stopped by to view the
aircraft. The aircraft displayed ranged from
trainers and sport airplanes to some
excellent scale aircraft and jets.
“In addition to the usual first questions
(how high, far, and much), the most asked
was ‘Where do you fly, and can the kids and
I come to watch?’ Since the club flies just a
few miles away from the mall, you can bet
there will be many visitors at the flying field
and some new members.
“The club members really appreciated all
the interest generated, but probably the most
rewarding encounters were with former
modelers who had ‘lost their way’ and no
longer flew. More than a few of these were
amazed at how far modeling has advanced
and most left hoping to return to their
former sport.
“Thank you to the many who worked so
hard to make this event a special success.”
Working with the public is what it was all
about. Hard to beat that smile!
Modelers Don Jurvisk, Don Phillips, Les
Hostrander, Chuck Cross, and Steve
Kremmer take a break during the busy day.

Hostrander get ready for the busy day after
setting up the display.
RC aerotowing is an enjoyable form of
gliding very similar to full scale. Simply
stated, a glider is pulled into the air with a
tow plane. Groups across the country are
doing this and now have a specific group
focused on promoting and coordinating the
fun for all the enthusiasts.
One of the group’s leaders is Dave Darr
of Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Dave has been
an organizer of “fun” for many years and his
guidance will be a positive enhancement to
this activity. The group’s website,
www.reaerotowing.com, is loaded with
information and contacts pertaining to
aerotowing.
Dave can also be contacted
via email at dave@rcaero
towing.com.
It is now time for the District
III election. Specific details
have been advertised in MA for
the past few months. In the next
few months, please become
familiar with the candidates and
vote accordingly.
