150 MODEL AVIATION
THIS IS THE
Scout’s
Aviation Merit
Badge patch
earned—with
help from the
Johnstown RC
Club—at the
recent Boy
Scout Aviation
Camporee, which took place at the
Johnstown Cambria County Airport. Doug
Lengendfelder was chairman of the event.
The Johnstown RC Club’s webmaster,
Roger Luther, assisted him in a number of
ways and 15 other club members
volunteered to help out at the weekend
event. There were roughly 155 Boy Scouts
who took part, and together with leaders and
instructors, the group totaled approximately
250.
The boys camped on the airport grounds
for two nights in tents, and spent Saturday
moving through 10 different instructional
sections to learn the requirements for the
Aviation Merit Badge. Subjects covered in
the sections included: aerodynamics, radiocontrolled
models, flight instruments, flight
planning, airplane preflight, building
airplanes, flying paper model airplanes,
control tower tour, radar control, and career
opportunities.
Eighty of the boys got to take airplane
rides in a four-seater Cessna 172, and all
who attended earned the aviation merit
badge.
Fred, Jim, and Bill Rosage demonstrate some
of the various features on their radiocontrolled
airplanes. Nearby, Paul, Neil, and
Mark covered the subject of aerodynamics in
another training section.
On the other side of the airport, Bruce,
Sam, Caleb, and Cliff helped the Scouts
make and then fly plastic airplanes made
from picnic plates. Club member Al Stein
conducted yet another class on the subject of
weather as it pertains to aviation.
Bruce Thomas helps a Scout adjust his
control surfaces to make his airplane turn to
the left.
The weekend went well, the rain held
off, and the boys got to see a number of
airplanes at the airport including a commuter
aircraft, Apache and Black Hawk
helicopters, plus a C-130 did a number of
low fly-bys and touch-and-goes. Several
small, privately owned airplanes were also
active during the day.
A local Johnstown pilot, Jim Loncella, pulled
his Piper Cherokee out of the hangar and
showed the boys how to do a preflight check
on his airplane during his section of the
training.
There were 14 Boy Scout Troops
represented and 155 Scouts from the greater
Johnstown area. This event was the last
Camporee for the Penns Woods Council,
which will merge with the Greater
Pittsburgh Council later this summer. It was
a wonderful way for our club to assist the
Boy Scouts, and to also perform a valuable
community service project.
Paul Yuhas, Mark Turzak, and Neil
Woffinden explain the complex subject of
aerodynamics to a group of attentive Boy
Scouts.
The boys were all given T-shirts with the
official Camporee emblem. Mountain Top
Technologies provided the private airplane
for the individual rides, and Subway,
Custom Cakes, and Galliker’s Dairy
provided the lunches for the Scouts on
Saturday.
We were very pleased at how the local
airport authority cooperated to let the Scouts
camp on the airport grounds, and gave the
boys such unprecedented access to the
airport facilities. The event was completed
without a hitch and everybody was well
satisfied, including 155 happy Boy Scouts!
The Johnstown RC Club provided the
bulk of the training instruction during this
important Scouting activity.
Thanks to Roger Luther for providing the
great information.
