2011 Hamburg Jet Jamboree
The Farview R/C Flyers of Hamburg, Pennsylvania, held its fifth annual Hamburg Jet Jamboree at Grim’s Airpark October 6–9, 2011. The event coordinator was Lee Buskirk and the CDs were Rick Boyer and Erik Rudjord. Fast Eddie Leuter was the announcer and kept the spectators entertained. Several local television stations and newspapers provided media coverage.
Seventy-four pilots arrived from the Northeast and Canada to fly more than 450 flights while enjoying perfect weather conditions. More than 800 spectators enjoyed turbine and electric model jet flying, as well as a noontime demonstration featuring some of the best East Coast RC jet pilots demonstrating precision model jet flying.
Grim’s Airpark features a 200- by 1,200-foot rolled grass runway with one of the nation’s best fly-over zones. The following awards were given to pilots who built and flew outstanding aircraft:
- Best Sport Jet: CAI Raptor — Wojtek Iwaniacyk
- Best Scale Jet: BVM MiG 15 — Scott Miller
- Best Electric Jet: BVM Electra — Michael Cramer
- Pilots’ Choice: Skymaster BAE Hawk — Frank Alvarez
- JPO Top Gun Award: D.H. Vampire — Kerry Sterner
Dave Brown and the Sea Cadets helped the club salute our nation’s colors during the playing of the National Anthem and provided excellent spectator parking support.
The Farview R/C Flyers thank the event sponsors, club members, pilots, and spectators who supported this event, and look forward to seeing everyone next year. For upcoming events, visit the club’s website at www.farviewflyers.net.
Jackson’s Mill United Methodist Church Boy Scout Buddy Box event
Each year dozens of Boy Scouts have the opportunity to try flying a model airplane during a retreat at Jackson’s Mill, West Virginia, sponsored by the United Methodist Men of the church’s West Virginia conference. During the men’s retreat, Scouts from around the state participate in numerous activities. One of those activities involves flying RC airplanes.
In September, 515 Scouts and their leaders participated in the retreat. On a crisp Saturday morning, many of the Scouts made their way to a seldom-used paved airstrip adjacent to the Jackson’s Mill conference center.
Each year, with the aid of buddy boxes, members of the Flying Hillbillies R/C Club and often other clubs (some of whose members are part of the United Methodist Men) let the Scouts try flying model airplanes. Every Scout who wants to fly is given the opportunity. An estimated 100 to 150 Scouts usually take advantage.
The Flying Hillbillies have been volunteering their time and talents for this annual event for the past five years.
If you or your club hosted or attended any interesting events and would like to see them covered in this column, please email me the information and pictures. I will do my best to include the material in a future issue.
Go fly and have fun!
