Empire State Indoor Championships
Last fall the Empire State Indoor Championships event was held at the Buffalo Bills’ practice arena in Hamburg, New York. The event was hosted by the Western New York Free Flight Society and the Flying Aces Club.
Science Olympiad — Wright Stuff
Included in this event was the Science Olympiad Wright Stuff program. A number of schools and individuals participated in this program.
Kane Area Middle School — Champions
When the scores were finalized, the team from Kane Area Middle School in Kane, Pennsylvania, was the champion. The team is comprised of:
- Kevin Leskovec
- Dustin Beane

Coach: Vern Olson
For the past six years Vern Olson has been the coach for the Kane team. Each year the team has won or placed at regional level competition. They have been Pennsylvania state winners twice and have competed at the nationals. At the nationals in Spokane, Washington, the team placed ninth. Special thanks are offered to Vern for his focus on this positive youth activity.
Wings Full of Wishes RC Air Show
The Wyoming Valley R/C Flyers held its second annual Wings Full of Wishes Radio Control (RC) Air Show to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The event was held at Moon Lake County Park.
This year’s activities included:
- Poko the Clown
- Face painting
- Raffles
- A deejay
- A bake sale
- A radio control air show
Make-A-Wish families and event sponsors were able to try their hand at flying an RC airplane. State Representative George C. Hasay also attended and spoke at the event.
Wings Full of Wishes 2002 raised $2,600 and was enjoyed by everyone. The average cost of a wish is approximately $5,000. The club has been able to raise enough money to fund a wish for a child from the proceeds of the past two years of the event.
Hiking and Soaring Society Event
The 33rd annual Hiking and Soaring Society event was hosted by the Toledo Weak Signals in the middle of February. Sixteen entries braved the extremely cold temperatures and high winds.
