District III Report - 2004/08

The flying season is finally upon us. Have you considered how safe your flying habits are? A large number of us have been flying for years; do we do it safely?

When the Executive Council discusses various safety problems, I often wonder why rules need to be made to replace what should be common sense. Many of the issues are very complex.

FF (Free Flight), CL (Control Line), and RC (Radio Control) all have different mindsets that affect safety. For example, the Safety Code explicitly describes the flightline. When the flightline is discussed with RC pilots, they offer a different viewpoint from that of FF pilots.

Who's right? Should we employ different definitions for various disciplines? I know what modelers would say, but I also realize the conflict that would be created within the U.S. legal system.

It is a shame that common sense cannot prevail. Please consider safety your number one objective while flying!

Donation: Curtiss F2C-2 model

Bill Johnson of Jamestown, New York, recently donated a fabulous model of a Curtiss F2C-2. Bill has an extensive background in aviation. Not only is he involved in modeling but also full-scale aircraft.

Pictured are vice presidents Dave Mathewson and Bob Brown presenting the model to Michael Smith at the AMA National Model Aviation Museum.

10th Annual East Coast Hobby Show

Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, was the venue for the 10th annual East Coast Hobby Show. As usual, many of the clubs that are members of the Delaware Valley Federation of Model Airplane Clubs participated.

This two-day show has grown in stature and vendors throughout the last 10 years. The winners of the various classes included:

  • Joe Koller — Indoor Free Flight
  • George Meyers — Free Flight
  • Jim VanSant — Control Line
  • Fran Schneider — Radio Control
  • Ron Moore — Best of Show
