District III Report - 2004/09
Associate Vice Presidents
Associate Vice President (AVP) Leo Rodriguez and John Hathaway provided the following information.
Is his moving to Florida District III's loss and District V's gain? Before leaving the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area, Harry Geyer made a donation of incredible value to the AMA's National Model Aviation Museum. Our newly minted AVP, Leo Rodriguez, was at the send-off dinner and accepted the treasure on behalf of the Academy.
The Mon Valley R/C Club, which flies at Cedar Creek Park, hosted the event. The club members presented Harry with several mementos, including:
- a beautiful plaque
- a "Florida" package — a safari hat and bug repellent
Harry and his partner James Podolny were instrumental in bringing radio control to the masses. The Good brothers, Bill and Walt, were leaders in the early design of RC equipment, but Harry and Podolny formed Beacon Electronics in Pittsburgh. They worked with the Good brothers to make radio control available to fellow modelers. To feed the growing demand, they produced an average of 50 to 60 of these early units a week and began shipping radios to other countries.
The material donated to the museum includes:
- original circuit designs
- pictures of the earliest systems
- historical documents and records galore
Harry's pioneer club, The Pittsburgh Flying Circuits, was chartered by AMA on April 21, 1950, and is recognized as the "First Chapter for Radio Control." Harry, thanks for sharing this exciting piece of history. Now enjoy that Florida sunshine!
Toledo Show 2004
AVP Joe Vislay provided some candid shots from Weak Signals' Toledo Show 2004. As you can see, the show provides various forms of excitement.
