District III Report - 2004/12

Author: Bob Brown

Edition: Model Aviation - 2004/12
Page Numbers: 159

December 2004 159
FOR THE PAST two months, we have been
developing a new Web site for District III. A
new webmaster, Kevin Sheen of Cranberry,
Pennsylvania, has created a format that will
allow all members of the Academy access to
the various interests of our District.
Please check out the site at
www.amadistrictiii.org. If you have any
suggestions that might enhance the page,
please contact Kevin or leave a message on
the Web site.
Unfortunately, all the links and pictures
from the previous site were lost. Please post
any links that you feel should be on the site.
Last August, the Top of Ohio Radio
Control Squadron hosted its annual Andy
Herider Memorial Pattern Contest at the
S & S Field in Quincy, Ohio. Contestants
came from Indiana, Michigan, New York,
and Ohio.
Bruce Herider was the CD and Norm
Burmaster provided the following photo.
These contestants enjoyed the TORCS
Pattern meet.
Troy, Ohio, was the site of the Weaver
Aircraft Co. (WACO), which in the 1920s
and 1930s manufactured the WACO
biplanes. Troy is also the home of the
Barnstormers. This lucky club uses the
runway and vast flyover area of the WACO
Historical Society.
Ray Weaver, Jack Arthur, Bill Wieringa,
and Doc Whaley enjoy their Senior Kadets.
A member of
the Barnstormers,
“Doc” Whaley,
provided some
insight into a few
of the members
with whom he
flies. The “Eight
Seniors” are all in
their seventies
and all fly Kadet
Seniors. The
oldest club
member, Kit
Carstensen, flies
a Yardstick.
Although Kit is in
his nineties, he still enjoys flying and nine
holes of golf each week.
The Black Sheep Squadron of Northeast
Pennsylvania recently put together a great
Aviation Day for the local Boy Scout troops
at the club flying field. The Scouts first had
a cookout lunch, followed by instruction for
the Aviation Merit Badge.
Demonstrations on aircraft operation,
engines, controls, and flight demonstrations
together with hands-on flying of trainer
aircraft ended the day. An RC flight simulator
in a mobile office was also a big hit.
Black Sheep secretary/treasurer Al Arnal
and safety officer Keith Hazleton instruct
the Scouts.
Several club members showed up to
support the event and learned a few things
themselves. Sponsoring the event turned out
to be a great way to promote our great
hobby, enhance the club spirit, and connect
with the needs of the community.
On a perfect day for a fun-fly, the RC
Short Circuits of Berlin Center, Ohio, had
theirs. The weather was just right and
attendance was higher than in other years.
This is an old loop, roll, and spin contest
along with a SPAD Combat competition.
Ken Jennings put on a helicopter
demonstration and Miles Reed flew his
airplane that resembled a 300 Extra for the
crowd during intermission. Also during
intermission, all children attending entered a
Hand-Launched Glider spot-landing contest.
Sam Miller provided the information and
following photos.
Mike Bush, Willard Headland, and Tom
McKinney prepare for a flight.
CD Carl Nutter advises the contestants.
Art Wright and his son are from Mendon,
Massachusetts.
Tom McKinney instructs prior to the
glider launch.
May we wish you an enjoyable holiday
season! Bob and JoAnne Brown.
