North Canton Hawks four-stroke rally and fly-in (August 15, 2004)

On August 15, 2004, the North Canton Hawks Radio Control Club held its annual four-stroke rally and fly-in at Hawks Field. Club members and spectators enjoyed a dazzling RC aerobatic demonstration by the locally and nationally renowned Miles Reed.

After his show, the Hawks honored Miles with the presentation of a Lifetime Club Membership and plaque in recognition of his nearly 50 years in RC modeling as a builder, designer, instructor, and show performer.

  • Pioneer in modeling 1/4-scale and larger airplanes
  • Designer and builder of the Weeks Special and the Weeks Solution RC airplanes
  • Designer/builder of a model of the Challenger biplane flown by full-scale stunt pilot Sean Tucker (Sean Tucker personally autographed the model for Miles)
  • Several of his designs have been commercially kitted in various sizes
  • Estimated to have built and flown more than 200 model airplanes
  • Active in several RC clubs in the Canton, Ohio area

I hope that one day Miles will be considered for Hall of Fame status for his many talents and achievements in RC modeling.

Ted Cremeans (message from Bobby Patterson)

Bobby Patterson of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, sent the following message:

"Enclosed is a photo I took of my flying friend and fellow club member, Ted Cremeans. Ted only has one arm, but before an untimely accident he was only six hours away from getting his full-scale private pilot's license.

"Because of his genuine love of aviation, Ted chose the next logical step: radio-controlled model aircraft. It's amazing to me that he was actually able to build the Sig Kadet Senior shown in the photo and even more amazing that, with the help of our club president, Wayne Saunders, Ted flies this model with a modified single-stick JR radio system thanks to our good friends at Horizon Hobbies.

"Ted and I belong to the Rio Grande Flyers located in Rio Grande, Ohio. We are blessed to fly on the original 3,000-acre Bob Evans' Farm."

Society of Antique Modelers (SAM)

The preamble for the Society of Antique Modelers (SAM) states: "The competition flying of FF and RC model aircraft of vintage design is intended to be casual, enjoyable, and interesting for both competitor and spectator alike. It is neither desired to advance the state-of-the-art of aeromodeling, per se, other than to increase participation in the sport generally, nor to reprove again that which is already recorded in aeromodeling history books."

Under SAM guidance, many District III modelers enjoy reliving the history of aeromodeling. Each year a SAM meet is held at the Weak Signals field near Toledo, Ohio.
