THE GREATER Cincinnati Radio Control
Club (GCRCC) held its 47th annual Flying
Circus August 11-12 at the Butler County
Regional Airport in Hamilton, Ohio. The City
of Hamilton estimated attendance to be in
excess of 7,500 during the two-day period.
The attendees were treated to a mixture
of Scale Aerobatics, balloon chase, balloon
busts, Golden Age racing, Reno racing, spindown
competition, a flying dog house, flying
lawn mower, flying road signs, and 16 scale
paratroopers jumping out of a C-130. There
were reenactments of aerial World War I
dogfights and World War II bombing runs
climaxing with a simulation of the atomic
bomb that ended that war.
For this year’s finale, the club honored
veterans by asking those in attendance to step
to the flightline to get a front-row view of a
World War II Hellcat on Saturday and a
turbine-powered aircraft on Sunday.
The flights were flown to specially
selected patriotic music that had many in the
crowd reaching for a soft tissue to wipe tears
away. In addition to the modeling activities,
local chapter 974 of the EAA (Experimental
Aircraft Association) displayed its works and
provided breakfast at a modest cost for airshow
participants and spectators alike.
The entire two-day airplane event drew
several thank-you letters from families of
veterans and airplane enthusiasts to the
GCRCC leadership and most importantly, an
invitation from the airport to return in 2008.
The GCRCC has nearly 200 members;
it takes the full cooperation of its
membership, their spouses, and family
members to put on this event. Each Saturday
evening after the show, the family of Bob and
Karen Zeisler cook a full-spread dinner for all
who are part of the air show. All of this is
after cooking all day for the crowd under the
hot August sun!
In addition to the Circus, the GCRCC
hosts the 169th Blue Chip Squadron Giant
Scale fly-in, Moon Shot Pylon Race, Kids Fly
for Spina Bifida, Pro Bro profile, and War
Bird fly-ins—very active club! See its Web
site at www.gcrcc.net.

The Columbus Aero RC Club was
approached by Mark Stewart, Scoutmaster
for Cub Scout Pack #136, and asked if the
club would be willing to host a pack meeting.
The theme for the meeting was The
Rockets Red Glare so Mark felt the activities
should be flight oriented. After some
discussion, the club members decided to
focus on a combination of static displays,
flight demonstrations, and interactive
discussions on radio-controlled aviation.
The typical pack meeting is only 60-90
minutes, which eliminated hands-on buddybox
flying. In spite of this, the event took
place on a weekday evening. Club members
showed very strong support for the event.
On the day of the event, probable
evening thunderstorms were forecast.
Thankfully, the skies cleared and there was a
beautiful blue sky for the event! The evening
began with a series of flight demonstrations
including gliders, electric and glow-powered
airplanes, and a wide range of helicopters.
The club members moved to an
interactive discussion of radio-controlled
aviation. There were many close-up
demonstrations of the aircraft. The club
entertained numerous questions from the
young Scouts and their parents. After
discussion, a few more flight demonstrations
were flown for the Scouts. As a souvenir of
the evening, each Cub Scout got to choose an
RC magazine and they definitely proved to be
popular gifts.
Despite the threatening weather, 22 Cub
Scouts attended in addition to 36 others
including parents, siblings, and pack leaders.
It was an evening that was thoroughly
enjoyed by the club members and Scouts.
The parents and Scouts were invited to come
back to visit soon!
