Ed Hawk — AMA District Service Award

Ed Hawk, president of the Wayne County RC Club, was given the AMA District Service Award for 30 years of unselfish leadership and devotion to the sport of model aviation. Ed Himes presented the award at a dinner held by the Oldtown Valley Flyers.

Ed has never stopped loving and learning from model planes. He is the driving force behind the success of the area modelers. He continues to promote the "total modeler" and is a person who enjoys all facets of our great sport. Congratulations, Ed!

Weak Signals — new field and clubhouse

For several decades the Weak Signals had a 10-acre field near Toledo, Ohio. During that time the club purchased additional acreage but still faced the problems associated with suburban growth. New houses and overfly concerns caused the club to reassess the field location and layout.

A committee, co-chaired by Dave Leach and Dave Howard, was formed to establish a field that would be conducive to all club members and to the local community. As a result, the entire field and clubhouse were relocated.

The new facilities include:

  • Clubhouse: 30 x 80 feet
  • Adjoining pilot shelter: 8 x 70 feet
  • Site improvements required by planning and zoning: an 84-foot driveway approach, two indoor bathrooms, a new well, a retention basin, and an oil separator

Delays in construction caused by permits and other issues created a great deal of aggravation; however, the new site was finally opened in November 2007. Congratulations to all those involved. The accompanying pictures illustrate that the wait was worth it.
