ONE OF THE longest-running model and
full-scale air shows takes place every
Labor Day weekend at Burke Lakefront
Airport in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.
Bernie Oldenburgh and the Cleveland
Aeromodeling Society have participated
and have generated a great focus on model
aviation for the past 34 years.
This year the Academy generated
increased activity by including the AMA
Show Team, the Northern Aces from
Green Bay, Wisconsin. Everyone worked
together with a positive relationship and
produced a worthwhile event.
Special thanks is extended to all of
those who were involved.
The pilots’ meeting in downtown Cleveland.
Tom Erb prepares a helicopter for the show.
The Northern Aces provided increased focus
on model aviation.
Larry Weimer flew this neat P-38.
The Ohio Valley Pattern Classic was held
August 29-30, 2009, at the beautiful flying
field in Saint Clairsville, Ohio. The event
has been growing over the past several
years and this year the CD reigns were
turned over to local Pattern veteran, Rick
Cilles.
The event was well attended with all
AMA and FAI Pattern classes flown with a
good representation of quality pilots in all
classes who hailed from Ohio, West
Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana,
and Michigan.
Saturday’s flying was delayed slightly
by a rainstorm, but the weather eventually
cleared and the Pattern competition began
in earnest.
The entry fee included flying and lunch
with Saturday featuring barbecue chicken
and Sunday Italian sausage sandwiches.
All of the competitors agreed this was one
of the best dining Pattern events around!
While the hobby has seen many
changes over the years and many special
interest groups advancing the hobby, RC
Pattern is still the backbone of many
talented fliers. Rick, his staff, and the Saint
Clairsville RC Fliers are to be commended
for their efforts to keep RC Pattern moving
forward.
Judging from reactions of the
competitors attending, look for this event
to grow bigger and better in the coming
years. Great job, Rick!
The Ohio Valley Pattern Classic competitors.
CD Rick Cilles and a portion of the crew.
May each of you have an enjoyable holiday
season!
