District III Report - 2010/06
TAG Grants
Four clubs in District III shared the prize for the 2010 Take Off and Grow (TAG) grants. Each club submitted its application for program content and evaluation.
The grants awarded were:
- Model Aircraft Recreation Society, Mars, Pennsylvania — $400
- Mad River Flying Association, Urbana, Ohio — $350
- Flying Tigers RC Model Club, Toledo, Ohio — $200
- Fairfield Ohio Radio Kontrol Society, Lancaster, Ohio — $186
We thank those clubs that provided applications. I hope next year’s AMA budget will recognize this program in a more positive fashion.
West Virginia RC Expo
The Jackson County Aeromodelers and the Flying Hillbillies teamed up with Chuck Westfall to put on one of the largest swap meets in the state of West Virginia. Throughout the years, both clubs have worked together and have done very well with different events.
The West Virginia RC Expo was Chuck’s brainchild. He wanted something close to home and, being the club president of the Jackson County Aeromodelers, he contacted the Hillbillies and the rest is history.
This is the second year of the event. Considering the extremely heavy snowfall, the attendance was great. Vendors included:
- Luke’s RC
- West Virginia Hobbies and Crafts
- Jim Jackson Foamy Aircraft
- T&K Karts and Hobbies
A number of private vendors came from Virginia, North Carolina, and Ohio. The Academy also added several new members.
Thanks to the Jackson County Aeromodelers and the Flying Hillbillies for putting on a great event. If you missed it, you missed some great deals. Rumors are that they are building a new armory in Millwood, West Virginia, that will have a hall three times the current building space. If I know Chuck Westfall and both clubs, the first event there will be bigger than the rest!
Black Sheep Squadron Mall Show
The Black Sheep Squadron Radio Control Flyers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, an AMA Gold Leader Club, recently sponsored a mall show static display featuring a variety of model aircraft. The special attraction this year was Bill Jones’s gyrocopter display.
The show is enjoyable and educational to the public, which is why it is a recommended Leader Club activity. For more information, visit the club’s web page at www.blacksheepsquadronpa.info.
Crosswinds RC Club Opening Day
The Crosswinds RC Club held its opening day picnic and fun-fly on April 4, 2010. Nestled inside Rancocas State Park in Westampton Township, the Crosswinds RC Club’s flying field is a beautifully manicured grass strip with practically unlimited fly-over area.
Add in grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, cold drinks, friendship, and beautiful weather for flying, and you have the perfect mix for a successful opening day picnic. Thanks for the invitation.
