Mark’s modeling memos: As I write
this, it’s the end of a very mild
February. For some of us in District III,
it allowed some flying outside. I think
it’s the first time in my life I remember
flying outside in the middle of winter!
This is a good thing.
Another good thing is that President
Obama signed the FAA Modernization
and Reform Act of 2012. This bill
contains an amendment sponsored
by Senator Inhofe (R-OK) essentially
exempting sport/hobby model aviation
from the rigorous FAA rules and
regulations that will be necessary for
the commercial sUAS industry.
However, we are still not out of the
woods. The AMA team working on this
complex issue is still concerned that
there will be new regulations that will
affect us after the proposed rules are
released.
What can you do? Watch the AMA
website, www.modelaircraft.org, and
click on the Government Relations tab
to obtain the latest information. If you
don’t use a computer, watch each issue
of Model Aviation magazine.
AMA is monitoring this issue 24/7
and will provide modelers with the
latest available information. When a
call to action is necessary, AMA will
notify every modeler; you can rest
assured of that.
District III also has a new Web
address. It is listed above in my
information. Be sure to check it out.
New District III associate vice president
(AVP): At this time I would like to
announce Tony Husack as a new AVP
serving District III. Here is listed Tony’s
information in his own words:
“I have been modeling for the last
45 years. In 1981, I joined the AMA
as well as the Mentor Area Radio
Control Society (MARCS) and started
flying RC. I have flown various sizes of
airplanes and truly enjoyed Giant Scale
as well as Pylon Racing.
“I volunteered to work the annual
mall show and found out how
enjoyable and rewarding it was being
involved with a large organization such
as the Cleveland Aeromodeling Society
(CAS) and having the ability as well as
the opportunity to provide education to
the public on modeling and flying RC
airplanes.
“Eventually I became the CD and
president of the CAS. The last 30 years
in the MARCS I have held offices as
president, vice president, treasurer,
member-at-large, and CD.
“Some of the events I have actively
managed as a CD include the Cleveland
Halle Indoor model show, which I took
over in 1986 from Bob Divley; field
fun-flys; and Giant Scale International
Miniature Aircraft Association AMA
events.
“I was co-CD of the Cleveland
National Air Show with Bernie
Oldenburgh from 1990 to present;
CDed Unlimited Scale Racing
Association Giant Scale racing events
for the last 12 years in Ohio, Kansas,
Texas, and California (ongoing); and I
ran the Holiday Electric Fly.”
Tony is very active in model aviation
and will be a great AVP for District III.
Thanks, Tony, for volunteering your
time and talents to the district and
AMA.
I received this from the Delaware
Valley RC Club of Bucks County,
Pennsylvania.
“This is a letter to inform you of
something terrific that has happened
here in Eastern PA. The Delaware
Valley RC club is over 40 years old, and
now we have a new item that I wish to
share with you.
“Mrs. Jessica Skelton has been elected
as our club president (47 members).
Yes! A female president! Jessica
graduated from Baptist Bible College
and is a certified music teacher.
“Jessica has been a very active
member of the club for the last four
years and she and her husband are
into helicopters. Her election to the
post was unanimous by the club’s
membership. We have loads of faith in
her ability to manage the club through
2012 and hopefully through 2013.
“Since the cutback in PA school art
programs, she has been working as a
safety instructor for a major corporation
here in Eastern PA. Question: How
many AMA clubs have a talented
female as their leader?”
Congratulations to Jessica! Until next
month, go fly and have fun!
