District III Report - 2012/06

Author: Mark Radcliff

Edition: Model Aviation - 2012/06
Page Numbers: 145

I would like to begin this month by
announcing a new addition for the
modelers of District III: www.amadistrictiii.
com.
This website is designed to be a
positive communication tool for
the modelers in District III to share
information. One of the main goals is
for you to list your upcoming events
specific to District III. This will allow
our members to visit the website and
see all the events that are happening
within Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West
Virginia. We encourage you to send in
newsworthy events and pictures that
can be posted to the homepage of the
District III website.
Do you know who your area associate
VPs are? We have a page listing them
with pictures and biographies. Need to
know the name of a club and its contact
information in a town or city you may be
visiting? This information is also listed.
The possibilities of this site are endless.
I hope this site will be a tool to help
everyone in District III enjoy the hobby
more. If you have any ideas, suggestions,
or event information, please send it to our
webmaster, Roger Luther, at: raluther@
atlanticbb.net. Roger has taken on this
daunting task and is doing a fantastic
job in a short period of time. Thank you,
Roger, for making this website a reality.
On March 3, 2012, my wife, Charmel,
and I had the honor and pleasure of
attending the Johnstown RC Club’s 50th
anniversary banquet. Here is a report on
the event from club newsletter editor and
webmaster Roger Luther.

The AMA club from Johnstown,
Pennsylvania, recently celebrated its 50-
year anniversary with a special awards
banquet. Guest speaker was AMA
District III Vice President Mark Radcliff.
In the above photo, Mark presents
club president, Sam Kaplitz, with a
plaque from the AMA, recognizing this
important milestone.
The Johnstown club has a membership
that hovers at roughly 50 members, and
holds three major events each year. These
include a January indoor fly-in, an annual
club banquet in March, and a mall show,
typically held in May. These activities are
in addition to the many regular flying
events and picnics held at the club’s
flying field during the warmer months.
One of the highlights of the evening
was the recognition of four club members
who have been with it for all of those 50
years of AMA affiliation.
The four are (L to R), Paul Yuhas, club secretary;
Jim Patterson, Caleb Butler, and Ken Reesey, club
vice president.
Caleb, who is now 84 years old and
still flies, founded the club in 1962. These
four men were honored with awards for
their continuous membership and service
to the club.
The banquet attracted more than 50
people. Members who built airplanes
during the winter months brought them
to the banquet for display and judging.
Awards were given out for first, second,
and third places in Ladies’ Choice, Best
Hand-Built Plane, and best ARF airplane.
The Blue Ribbon-winner of the night was Bruce
Thomas, for a sharp Top Flight P-47 Thunderbolt
shown above.
Club president, Sam Kaplitz, with newsletter
editor and webmaster, Roger Luther.
In addition to a wonderful meal,
remarks from Mark Radcliff, and
numerous awards, Roger Luther and Paul
Yuhas presented a PowerPoint slideshow
with pictures covering all 50 years of the
club’s existence, including some from
each of the six flying fields the club has
had during that time. The club has been
fortunate to have continuous use of the
same field for the past 35 years. More
information about the Johnstown Club
can be viewed at www.johnstownrc.org.
Until next month, go fly, have fun, and
