Alan Fry of the Colonial Virginia Aeromodelers (CVA) submitted this report.
CVA is pleased to announce that our National Model Aviation Day event, held August 17, was a huge success. Many longtime club members believed it was one of the best events that CVA has had—with a record-setting attendance of more than 250 people. Many CVA pilots signed up for tasks that made National Model Aviation Day 2013 a great event.
One of those leading the way was Carl Rannigan, who did prep work before and during the event. Carl is also the master when it comes to grilling hotdogs and hamburgers.
Bill Coada kept the crowd on the edge of its seats when flying his gas-powered turbine jet and Giant Scale airplanes. Between flights, Bill would “work” the crowd by performing his microphone magic.
Our training staff gave roughly 30 guests a chance to fly an RC airplane using the buddy-box system. Although it was called National Model Aviation Day, CVA had pilots from a local airport do a flyover with a Piper Cub and an ultralight. That was a real crowd pleaser at the Williamsburg, Virginia, event!
CVA would like to thank Chick-fil-A and Rita’s, both of Williamsburg, for their support. With their help, our 50/50 raffle and donation jar raised money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
This report comes from Nic Burhans, president of the Culpeper Model Barnstormers.
The Culpeper Model Barnstormers hosted its first fall model aircraft Pattern contest on September 14-15, 2013, at Culpeper County, Virginia’s Lenn Model Airpark. Additional local model flying clubs supporting the event were the Fauquier Aero Recreation Modelers, Northern Virginia Radio Control club, and the Prince William County Radio Control Flyers.
Twenty-seven contestants from seven states participated in the five classes of the Pattern competition. Participants included two 2013 World Team participants, two Tournament of Champions participants, and numerous past and present district champions. All enjoyed the quiet, unobstructed, and spacious layout of Lenn Model Airpark and its outstanding Bermudagrass runway.
In addition to the family members who accompanied the participants, numerous visitors from Culpeper, Orange, Fauquier, and Fairfax counties stopped by to enjoy the competition and the weekend’s crisp and sunny weather.
A catered lunch was available on Saturday and a contestant cookout was held Saturday night. Certificates and prizes were awarded to the top three in each of the five classes. Additionally, two prizes were awarded for the highest percentage of possible scores.
The contest was a success and all of the participants voted that they wanted to do it again next year.
Bob Karlsson was recognized for 38 years of dedicated service to the District IV Scale Contest Board and AMA on November 2, 2013. John Kirchstein presented him with a plaque.
