News from Colorado

On March 22, 2003, the Sky Corral Radio Control (RC) Club of Pueblo, Colorado, was invited to participate in a static display of RC models at the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Museum. Fourteen members showed up with 21 models. This was the club's first venture with the museum, and they hope to participate in more.

The museum has a good collection of aircraft, many of which are displayed in a new hangar. The indoor collection includes a B-29 and many other aircraft, much World War II material, a large aircraft reference library, and more. It was a good turnout, and museum visitors were impressed with the display. Besides showing off many styles of RC aircraft, we answered several inquiries regarding membership.

We recently developed a working relationship with the local model rocketry club. They have been having a difficult time finding a good site for rocket launches, and since we have plenty of room, we decided to share our area. They recently visited our field and feel it will meet their needs. (They are insured.) We feel it will increase awareness of both activities.

Del Milne, Sky Corral RC Club secretary, submitted this information.

Letter from District IX Associate Vice President Mark Smith

District IX Associate Vice President Mark Smith, from Shawnee, Kansas, sent the following letter about his trip to Florida. It illustrates the bonds and camaraderie of aeromodelers everywhere.

I feel compelled to write and share my recent experience with you and the District IX faithful readers. The purpose of this note is to underscore the fantastic fraternity of modelers I have had the privilege of meeting and playing with when visiting Florida.

In March, I had the opportunity to visit our son in Orlando, Florida, for a couple of weeks to help him with household "chores" and spend some quality father/son time. This is the third year I have done this and I again visited the local Osceola Flyers flying field to renew friendships and fly from their great facility.

This is one of the friendliest clubs I have observed, and they really know how to have fun! To demonstrate this, I have attached a few pictures on how they have fun "down South." This shows the relaxed setting of the March club meeting at the field. It appears to me that being a club officer allows you the privilege of sitting at the picnic table. That's small payment for such large responsibilities!

Here is a shot of the 2003 Osceola club officers (L–R): Luis Guillen, Bob Vanderbrook, Jerry Wiltse, and Larry Purvis. This is my good friend, Tim Yousey, preparing his airplane, affectionately referred to as The Pig, for me to fly again. Tim's a brave soul! This is the Osceola Flyers' very own show team (L–R): Jeff Heidemann, Chris Tate, and Tim Yousey. These three guys fly propeller-driven jets very fast and close. Real crowd pleasers!

What do the Osceola Flyers do when it's too windy to fly? Tim used to fly kites professionally for Disney and this shows his awesome abilities. I couldn't submit this article without including a shot of my son, Shane, holding our new Magic Extra which I ordered from Hobby People and had shipped to his home so we could assemble it. By the way, it flew great!

In conclusion, I was so impressed with the Osceola Flyers that I joined their club! My hope is that I can encourage others in District IX to visit other clubs and share in their fun and fellowship.
