Ten pilots gathered to fly in the Lincoln Sky Knights Open B Combat event on Saturday, May 3. It was a great day to fly combat and the contest ran smoothly. Don Howard of Oklahoma led the pack in points during the first half of the meet.

The group took a break for lunch after three rounds. Thanks to Paul Cooper for traveling back from Alaska to serve up some great-tasting hamburgers.

Combat maintained its intensity through the rest of the day. After six rounds of combat, Don Howard kept a solid hold on first place with 2,322 points. Fifteen-year-old B.J. Mayle Jr. from Kansas took second place with 1,872 points. Neil Byrd from Minnesota finished third with 1,368 points. As always, everyone had a fun time.

Special thanks to contest director Neil Rohrke, Paul Cooper, Tom Hefley (flight line boss), the judges, and everyone else who helped out.

Unfortunately, the Sunday scale event was rained out and no one had floats for their combat airplanes.

Remember: combat is the most fun you can have with a radio-control airplane. Build, fly, crash, rinse, and repeat.

News from South Dakota

From the BARF RAG, newsletter of the Beresford Area Radio Flyers. Information and photos courtesy of David Larsen.

The 15th annual Father’s Day Fun-Fly was hosted by the Beresford Area Radio Flyers (BARF) on a beautiful June 15. More than 20 pilots from six area clubs and one pilot from Ocala, Florida, attended.

It was a great day of flying, visiting, and hangar talk. The winds were light and several pilots made electric flights with their Park Flyers. Bill Chambers flew a large version of the GWS Pico Stik, and Wayne Helgager made several flights with an electric model of his own design.

The scale Tiger Moth ARF flown by Bill Beck of Sioux Falls was also a highlight. Dave Jastram from Dell Rapids flew some low-level inverted passes with a Midwest Jetster that had to be seen to be believed. It was good the grass was cut short.

Many BARF members attended and flew. Don Van Voorst brought two nice models to the fun-fly: a Goldberg Chipmunk powered by an O.S. 91 FS and a Great Planes Cherokee 40.

Longtime club member Dale Jorgensen, who now resides in Ocala, Florida, was present and flew a Spacewalker ARF powered by a 120 FS engine. The model was very graceful in the air.

One of the youngest BARF members is Zach Holoch, a high-school student who has been flying models since junior high. He is now doing a great job flying his Sig Four-Star 40.

Darrell Moget is the “frequent flier” of the club; he attends most fun-fly events in the area and racks up a lot of flying time. Darrell puts many hours on his Goldberg Falcon 56 but was doing some unusual, wild, and crazy aerobatics with a Tower Hobbies Uproar at this event.

The pilot’s raffle this year featured a Sig Four-Star 40 kit. Each pilot received a raffle ticket with registration; the winner was Don Hughes from Alcester, South Dakota. Don is a prolific modeler who usually builds from plans or his own designs and will probably have this model in the air in a couple of weeks.
