NEWS FROM COLORADO

From Gary Hayes, newsletter editor of the Grand Junction Modeleers, comes this information about current activities of the club.

On April 29 the Grand Junction Modeleers held their annual mall show at the Mesa Mall and an air show at the Grand Valley Model Airport the following day.

The mall show had seventeen entries, including two helicopters and a steam-powered boat. Jack Karst collected the Pilots' Choice and Best of Show awards with his turbine-powered Boomerang. Ralph Erskine collected the award for People's Choice with his scale C-160 in Coast Guard colors.

The air show was open to the public and 13 Modeleers took part demonstrating radio control (RC) flying. A nasty crosswind was present for much of the day but everything went well. A trainer with a buddy cord was available and in use, providing an introduction for spectators to RC flying.

Hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips, and cold drinks were available.

The pilots included:

  • Ralph Erskine
  • Bruce Hayes
  • Cliff Bradford
  • Jack Karst
  • Don Fox
  • Ken Pedersen
  • Ed Nummelin
  • Bill Hayden
  • Dave Dickey
  • Bob Toth
  • Duane Golden
  • Len Switzer
  • Lucas Clark

Bill Hayden served as the buddy-cord pilot.

Gene Nelson and Len Switzer staffed the frequency impound. The air show coordinator and all-around organizer was Gene Nelson. Thanks to Gene for a super job.

The Modeleers have completed some upgrades in the last 18 months. A crosswind asphalt runway and new pilot stations have been added, and the frequency control center was relocated and modified to make it easier to use. An aerial view of the field was included.

News from Kansas

This comes from the Fly-Paper, newsletter of the R/C Barnstormers Airplane Club, telling of a joint club effort to introduce Cub Scouts to model aviation. It was written by one of the participants, Jim Schauf.

On Friday, June 13, Virgel Rhoades, John Lewis, Jim Schauf, and David Bowles of the R/C Barnstormers Club and the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club (SMRCC) gave a flight demonstration to a Cub Scout jamboree at Louis Young Park in Louisburg, Kansas.

They explained the airplanes and functions of the transmitter to the boys and some of their parents. Jeff Rusk, the main leader of the three-day jamboree who invited the clubs to come and fly, is a former member of SMRCC.

Jim and Virgel gave more than 30 Scouts a one- to two-minute flight on the Eagle 2 demonstration airplane. The Scouts really enjoyed it when Virgel made each one feel as if they were doing all of the flying while he gently nudged their fingers into the correct position for flight. Jim flew the aircraft around to position for the next eagerly awaiting boy to try his skills. It took a while to get them all in the air.

While the demonstration flights were going on, John and David flew airplanes to keep the others interested. They did a great job with electrics, little airplanes, and David on the helicopter. The boys would usually clap after the landings.

They were an appreciative group and everyone enjoyed the event. The weather was perfect with clear skies followed by some clouds and a little wind. The clubs would like to think that a new generation of pilots was introduced to the wonders of flight that day.
