News from Kansas
On October 18 of last year, the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club (SMRCC) put on a static display and flying demonstration for more than 1,000 Boy Scouts and their families at their annual District Camporee, which focused on 100 Years of Aviation. Rich Waeltermann, vice president of SMRCC, coordinated the event with the Boy Scout officials.
Our work began on Friday with several of us cutting out a runway, setting up our large canopy, and taping off the pit area. Rich ensured that the static display included aircraft from all eras.
The Scouts seemed somewhat interested in the static display and more interested when a couple of us flew our airplanes. However, we were the hit of the Camporee when we brought out a couple of trainers and buddy boxes. The fun began and a line of eager Scouts grew to more than 100 waiting for their turn. We flew the boys on the trainers constantly for more than four hours and had a ball.
The questions from the boys and the looks of excitement on their faces were indescribable. If we get a chance to do this again next year, we will definitely have more trainers for the boys and a Delta Dart program set up to keep them busy while they are waiting for their turn to fly.
If anyone in District IX has this opportunity, please take the time to organize a flying event for the Boy Scouts. I assure you that you and your club will be the main beneficiaries!
We had a great time and it would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of Rich Waeltermann. Photos were taken by our club newsletter editor, Shane Sternecker. Thanks to Mark Smith, the associate vice president in Kansas, for supplying this information.
News from Colorado
July 12, 2003 was a special day for the Sky Corral R/C Club of Pueblo, Colorado. Pete Tandberg, Maintenance and Engineering Manager for the Rocky Mountain Steel Corporation, reviewed a proposal submitted by club member Charles Abbate.
The proposal included AMA sanction, site insurance, AMA member insurance, AMA and Sky Corral safety rules, and the responsibilities Sky Corral would adhere to. Pete Tandberg gave his approval for a sanctioned fly-off water event to be flown July 12 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at one of the steel corporation’s reservoirs. Permission such as this is not granted lightly and we certainly felt special.
Butch Dodge, Water Supervisor for Rocky Mountain Steel, was most helpful in providing entry to the property and in escorting several club members to various locations while searching for a flying site. The site selected was a grassy area with plenty of parking, sun shelter set-up, and excellent spectator viewing.
Thirteen Sky Corral members and three out-of-city fliers flew a variety of aircraft, including:
- Four Sea Masters
- Two Sea Cruisers
- One Kadet Senior (used for aerial photos)
- One Magic
- One Nobler
- One Jos Stik
- One Republic Sea Bee
- One Kingfisher
- One de Havilland Beaver
- A vintage biplane
- An Ace .40
- A Hot Shot
Club members Glen Butler, Phil Youngren, and Fred Sutton did much to ensure a great day. Member Richard Corty barbecued ribs, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers. David Napier, a new club member, supplied one big sun shelter with another in reserve if needed. We had some great help — thanks!
Pete Tandberg visited the site in the afternoon and a preliminary question as to using this facility again was answered most favorably. It was a fun day.
Story and photos were submitted by contest director Chuck Abbate.
