News from South Dakota

Submitted by Jim Tiller, newsletter editor for the Rapid City Propbusters R/C: an article about the Propbusters’ fourth annual Show and Contest at the South Dakota Air Museum Open House at Ellsworth Air Force Base, held Saturday, May 8.

This was our fourth appearance as part of the Air Museum’s annual open house. As in our first three appearances, we held a static show and sponsored trophies for a low-pressure contest to reward builders in several categories: Best Small Plane, Best Large Plane, Best International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) Plane, and Best of Show. We encouraged visitors to cast ballots for a People’s Choice award, and this year we added a Pilot’s Choice category.

We had many entries this year and the quality of the work was superb, making the decision of the judges, Mike Schwab and Warren Malone, pretty tough. The winners in each category were:

  • Best Small Plane: Ken Corrin — Electric Sailplane
  • Best Large Plane: Doug Strop — Four-Star
  • Best IMAA Plane: Zac Roller — Sukhoi
  • People’s Choice: Gene Kelley — Extra
  • Pilot’s Choice: Wayne Zimmerman — Edge 540
  • Best of Show: Zac Roller — 1/4-scale Piper Cub
  • South Dakota Air Museum’s Award: Wayne Zimmerman — Edge 540

For the past several years we have been working with the museum to allow our AMA Air Show Team, the Gold Squadron, to put on a flying show. The museum’s location is a stone’s throw from the Ellsworth Air Force Base main entrance, so we were unable to get past security concerns and received a negative answer to our requests.

Prior to the show this year, we were able to get permission for a demonstration of our electric aircraft for all interested base and museum personnel. Zac Roller put on quite a performance with his one-pound electric 3-D foamy flyer, and the officials in attendance were impressed enough to allow us to do two electric flight demonstrations at this year’s show.

The morning demonstration was a success, but the afternoon show was canceled because of high winds; however, the air museum director did ask for another flight performance next year. This shows what perseverance and negotiation can do. I am sure we will be able to increase our flight participation as the years pass.

Museum director Ron Alley has been very complimentary of our relationship with the museum’s open house and encouraged us to do more. After four years, we have become a permanent part of their annual event and with each year the show gets a little bigger and better.
