District IX Report - 2007/11
Hi, folks! I hope you are enjoying the summer flying season as much as I am. This past weekend I flew a slope plane so long that the receiver batteries died on me — but more on that next month.
Here are a couple of cool events that happened around our district. Enjoy!
Warbirds Over Denver (4th Annual)
The fourth annual Warbirds Over Denver is now in the history books! You could call it a "perfect flight." The weather was absolutely awesome.
Our out-of-town pilots and guests began arriving Thursday after many long hours of driving. They dropped their trailers and checked out the field, the weather, the altitude, and the competition.
We welcomed pilots from Minnesota, Montana, Illinois, Texas, New Mexico, and Utah. Overall, we had 69 registered pilots, many of whom came from our neighboring clubs. I counted 110 aircraft at noon on Saturday and I'm sure there were a few more still tucked back in the trailers.
Everyone had a fabulous time and went through much sunscreen and bottled water! I'm still receiving calls and emails from pilots saying what a great time they had and what they are planning to start building for next year. We are such passionate, obsessed hobbyists!
Highlights from the event included:
- A P-51 gaggle with eight Mustangs flying in formation on Saturday — definitely a crowd pleaser.
- A safe event with no mid-airs, though we had our share of crashes and mishaps.
- The newly named "Smokin' Hole Award" for the best crash (toilet seat with a cigar) was a big hit.
- RC heaven now has a few more additions. May they all rest in peace.
- This event continues to attract national attention with Colorado style and hospitality. The Jefco Aeromod'lers is very proud of this accomplishment.

Chisholm Trail RC Club Sod Busters Jumbo Fun-Fly
The Chisholm Trail RC Club Sod Busters Jumbo Fun-Fly was held July 21–22. A couple of years ago I heard of this great fly-in just south of Wichita, Kansas, and as luck would have it, I was able to attend. If you are ever in the area, don't miss this one! The club's new flying facilities are second to none and you feel welcome the minute you arrive. We had plenty of time to fly and many beautiful and interesting airplanes.
One of my flying buddies, Bruce Berry, and I, along with our wives, made a weekend out of the trip. The wives shopped while Bruce and I enjoyed the event. Yep, Wichita in July is hot, but the club had ice-cold watermelon for all at roughly 2:00 in the afternoon! The food and fellowship were simply outstanding and I want to thank the Chisholm Trail Club for a great weekend.
That's it for this month. Next month I'll tell you about losing my ex-good friend's airplane. (Just kidding!) Until then, have fun and keep in touch!
