180 MODEL AVIATION
ON SEPTEMBER 13, I lost my wife
Christy to breast cancer. I want to thank
everyone who called, sent cards and letters,
sent flowers, or made a donation in my
wife’s name to the American Cancer
Society!
In times like this, it is great to know we
have a wonderful group of modelers who
step up to help a friend in need!
By the time you read this, we should have a
new Executive Director at AMA. I leave for
an Executive Council meeting on Friday,
October 13, and we will be interviewing the
applicants and voting to select one of them
at the meeting.
Jose Soto sent in the following report on
giant scale Pylon racing in Central Florida.
October 7, 2006, saw the 240 Pylon
Racing Association put on a great race at the
Remote Control Association of Central
Florida’s flying field in Apopka. This type
of racing is competitive and affordable; the
pilots all fly Mel Whiteley’s Sport 240
aircraft. This is an 80-inch sport design that
is easy to build and fly!

The 240 Association has a circuit that it
follows throughout Florida and the way the
members promote the sport of Giant Scale
Racing is hobby friendly. The pilots register
and pay $25, the host field gets $10 from
every registration, and the association brings
all the equipment needed for racing such as
the stop watches, radios, pylons, plaques,
and food! All the host club has to do is
provide the venue and roughly 10 workers
for the line and lap counting. What the club
gets is exposure to a great group of modelers
promoting the hobby at its best.

Friendly competition is the order of the
day and everyone has much fun doing it. If
your field is interested in hosting a race,
drop me a message. I’ll be happy to serve
you.

Dick Tonan sent this report on the Rocky Top Controliners’ July 22 fly-in held in
Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
“One of the newest AMA clubs in Tennessee is the Rocky Top Controliners of
Millersville, Tennessee, and it was my privilege to attend the club’s first event: a CL flyin.
My friend and fellow RC pilot called and told
me about the event and suggested that it might be
worthwhile for me to be there. Since I wanted to
visit Glenn and seek his help on a project and the
fly-in was to be in his front yard, I decided to go
and I’m delighted I did.
“As with many of my fellow “older” RC pilots,
my entry to powered model flight was through
control line. I go back to the days of the O.K. Cub
.049, U-Reely’s, and open exhausts. Boy, have
things changed! To illustrate this point, look at the
models in the picture.
“It’s inevitable that whenever you get two or
more CL pilots together, streamers appear on the
back of the airplanes and the pilots try to get rid of
them by cutting them off each other. I wasn’t able to
get a picture of the models involved in this action
with my oh-so-slow digital camera but I did get a
shot of pilots Steve Maddox and Mike Londke.
“It was a great day that brought back some
pleasant memories. Thanks to club president Steve
Maddox, treasurer Walter Bowden,
safety officer Mike Londke, and the
club members for their warm
hospitality. By the way, if you think
that things happen fast in RC, try
doing a vertical figure 8 on 60-foot
lines!”
That’s all for now! The Rocky Top Controliners.
I remember when a .35 Nobler (the
one behind the Corsair) was big.
