Overview

Busy, busy! There’s a lot going on in District V. First, I want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season.

I returned from our quarterly EC meeting in Muncie, Indiana, and I am happy to report that we passed a balanced budget for 2006.

Club Disaster Assistance Program

We created a Club Disaster Assistance program to allow clubs to apply for a one-time grant of up to $500 to assist any AMA club with clean-up costs after a natural disaster such as a hurricane, earthquake, or flood. The application process is designed to be streamlined and easy. If your club was affected by a hurricane in 2005, contact AMA Headquarters to apply.

The program was started with $20,000, but AMA wants your help to increase this fund. If we could increase this to $100,000, it would be great. If you or your club would like to donate, contact AMA Headquarters.

District Associate Vice Presidents (AVPs)

As I make plans for 2006, I will be reviewing how the district associate vice presidents (AVPs) have served you. I solicited AVPs who wanted to work. Some have done a great job by attending club meetings and events. Those who are working hard have turned in reports to me; you can see them on the district’s website at www.amadistrict-v.org.

I will send a letter to all District V clubs asking what the AVPs and I can do in 2006 to serve the membership more effectively.

Reports

Memphis Belle Classic (October 7–9, 2005)

The Millington Barnstormers held their annual Memphis Belle Classic. It was the 18th year of the biggest event in the Memphis, Tennessee, RC community. The weather was slightly breezy, but it was a beautiful weekend and a great site.

Club president Anthony Cales, CD Cliff McNabb, and club members did an outstanding job putting on an event that was fun for all participants.

As is tradition at the Memphis Belle Classic, there were B-17 models. Builder Larry Wells provided three scratch-built B-17s that photos do not do justice. There were many other notable models:

  • Grant Wilson and his wife brought a B-36 powered by six O.S. 32s; it was an outstanding flyer.
  • Louis Rankin and John Stanton brought a U.S. Navy Stearman and an S.E.5 that were also exceptional.

Memphis is known for its barbecue, but when it comes to RC events, this is one you should not miss.

Tennessee Rotary Wing — First Annual Fall Classic

Start a new club: check. Promote the club to obtain new members: check. Host your first-ever event within six months: big check.

The Tennessee Rotary Wing Club held its first event the weekend of September 2–4, 2005, in Cookeville, Tennessee. The club secured a former small airport as the site of its field, which provided a beautiful setting for the event. CD Chris Kirouac, Terry Moore, and the rest of the club members worked hard to provide participants with a fantastic first event. With over 3,000 feet of flightline, pilots enjoyed flight stations with ample room for both 3-D and FAI flight.

Most of us know that running an event can be a daunting task, so hats off to CD Chris and the Tennessee Rotary Wing Club for hosting a successful event in the club’s first year as an AMA club.
