February 2006 177
I STILL WANT to hear from District V
clubs that are interested in hosting a major flyin
in 2006. I have one scheduled in Mobile,
Alabama, but I am looking for three or four
more clubs to contact me and host an event. I
will have some funds available for the club to
help in this effort!
Owen Maupin, one of the associate vice
presidents (AVP), sent in this report on the
Extreme Aerobatic Club (EAC) fly-in in
Mobile, Alabama.
“The Azalea City Flyers in Mobile is in
AVP Paul Verger’s district however, Paul
wasn’t able to attend the EAC fly-in this year.
Since I fly in the EAC and was there, I’ll pass
along a report on the event.
“Thanks to Wes Batson, Marie Thomas,
and the Azalea City Flyers for putting on a
pilot’s dream event! Each evening there was
something different to do. There was a free
cookout and party at Wes’s house on
Thursday night and we had a great time!
Friday for lunch the club cooked barbequed
chicken with potato salad and baked beans,
again free of charge!
From the left are pilots Dewayne Long, Brain
Zang, Wes Batson, and Blaine Austin.
David Payne and spotter Daniel Maupin enjoy
a close-up of David’s Carden Edge 540.
Here are just some of the airplanes that were
on hand for the event.
“Friday evening
we took a chartered
bus to Lulu’s
Restaurant. On the
way to the
restaurant we
watched flying
footage from
Thursday and
Friday on the 10
televisions in the
bus. Since Lulu is
Jimmy Buffet’s
sister, I was able to
have Cheeseburger
in Paradise!
“Saturday’s fare
included donuts,
coffee, and lunch
and the only charge was a donation. Saturday
evening the club provided pizza for everyone.
You just absolutely outdid yourselves!
“Oh yeah, the flying was outstanding as
well! The Carden and Aeroworks Team pilots
and many others put on a great show! There
was a good crowd of spectators on hand to see
it all and be amazed at the skills of these
superb pilots.
“If you want to see some of the best 3-D
pilots in the world fly, go to an EAC event.
You won’t be disappointed!”
AVP Jose Soto sent in this report on the
Orlando Buzzards’ 32nd annual Tangerine
Soaring Championships.
“On November
26-27, 2005, the
Orlando
Buzzards held its
32nd Annual
Tangerine
Championship!
This is one great,
long-running,
traditional gaggle
and CD Rick
Eckel and his
club put on a great show. There were 34
registered pilots and a great many Sailplanes.
Saturday they had two-meter/RES and for
Sunday it was Unlimited/RES. The format
was thermal duration plus the landing. It was
no small task and to the layman it would seem
easy. The fact that you are trying to get a
seven-minute duration flight and then you
have to nail the landing or you get a zero
makes it very competitive and most of all fun!
“I met with many good friends, had an
awesome time and the weather was just
magnificent. Kudos to the Buzzards for
keeping a wonderful, traditional event going
for so many years. I hope to see you there
next year if you can make it! Visit the club’s
Web page at: www.orlandobuzzards.org. I
guarantee a good time.”
Jose also sent this report on the Remote
Control Association of Central Florida’s
(RCACF) first annual Electric Fly-in.
“On Sunday, November 13, 2005, I
attended and was the assistant CD for the first
Annual RCACF Electric Fly-in. Wally Zober,
longtime member of RCACF did a fabulous
job coordinating and directing the event. We
had wonderful weather and many pilots came
from all directions. In all we had 35 registered
pilots and nearly100 airplanes.
“Gary Wright brought out his stable of
goodies but his best was a wonderful hotliner
that made us all gasp with its incredible
speed! Rich Uravitch also came out with a
hangar full of beautiful machines including
his now famous OV-10 Bronco. Bob Fiorenze
flew the most beautiful Bell chopper we have
seen in a while and I even saw a Scale Huey
flying!
“Lou Davila, David Morris, and all the
other pilots who attended made this one of the
year’s best electric fly-ins. All of the pilots
had a great time. The spectators lined the
fence most of the day and the RCACF
workers kept everything running smoothly
from the weenie-wagon staffed by Daryl and
Michelle Bishop to the parking coordinators
Reg Aimee and Kurt Van-Zyl.
“RCACF put on a great event.
Congratulations and hope to see you there
next year!”
