The winter has been fairly mild so far here in the Southeast. There has been lots of great flying weather around the area and many modelers are taking full advantage of it. With a very busy season ahead, I look forward to meeting more of you this year.
As I promised in my campaign, I have my 2005 financial report on how monies were spent in the district posted on the AMA District V web site at www.amadistrict-v.org. I hope that you take the time to see how your district funds were used this past year. If you have any questions about the report, please feel free to contact me.
I am looking for a few new associate vice presidents (AVPs) to cover the South Florida area. Rod Geir has decided to step down as AVP, and I need to find someone in the Miami/South Florida area to serve as well. If you are interested, contact me by e-mail.
Toys for Tots Fly-In — Dixie Aeromasters (Macon, Georgia)
Submitted by Bob Dixon
The Toys for Tots fly-in was held on December 10, 2005. The weather could not have been better; it was only a bit nippy in the early morning. A great crowd was on hand to enjoy the flying and make a contribution to the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserves. It should be noted that the Marine Corps sponsors Toys for Tots all over the United States in various fund-raising ways.
Present to see the day's action were Sergeants Wirt Durden and Michael Clark in full dress uniform from the 970th Detachment Marine Corps League. They posed for a picture with my CAP 580 at full attention. How would you like to have those two men guarding your airplane?
Activities at the fly-in included:
- Trainer aircraft raffle
- Paintball shoot at a fly-by aircraft
- Stick-time sessions for the kids
- Freestyle demonstration by Ryan Evans
- Finale flight by Mac Hodges and his fabulous B-29
The Dixie Aeromasters raised $1,320 plus all of the toys donated to the kids of the community. This is yet another awesome way for us to minister to and help community organizations in need and still have a great time doing it. I encourage everyone to come to one or any of these types of fly-ins and enjoy the blessings that abound.
Sarasota Modelers Memorial Warbird Fly-In (November 10–11, 2005)
Submitted by AVP Jim Saiff
Each year the Sarasota Modelers club remembers Pearl Harbor with a Memorial Warbird Fly-In. Pilots from across the state and beyond come to the field to spend the weekend flying. This weekend was no different. With more than 55 pilots registered and 65 airplanes on the field, the event was its usual success.
CD Jon Hay and his staff kept the days going with all sorts of exhibitions and demonstrations, while the pilots themselves put on their own show. Notables such as Dr. William McCauley with his P-40 and Chip Greene with his famous Bearcat wowed the crowd with their flying skills.
The youngest pilot there, Kirby Cole, put on an excellent show with his Mustang, along with local Joe Saitta with his silver-covered Mustang.
If you missed the show, there's always next year.
