District V - 2006/05
Tony Stillman, District V Vice President
The Southeastern Model Show had a large turnout this year. The show usually signals the beginning of the spring flying season in District V.
At the show, I met with many of you and shared ideas and issues. Thanks for taking the time to come by and speak with me and the associate vice presidents (AVPs) who attended. Many AVPs were able to make the meeting and help in the AMA booth, too.
Thanks to Sandy Frank and AMA librarian Rich LaGrange for spending time in the AMA booth.
Several AVPs were on hand to help me answer questions at the District V meeting at this year’s Southeastern Model Show. I am proud of the group of AVPs who are working to assist clubs in District V. These men take time from their family and jobs to attend meetings and club events. They make telephone calls and send emails to these clubs as well. It is this kind of effort at the local level that gets the work done. Because our district has almost 400 clubs, it is a huge effort to contact all of them. I cannot do it alone!
I am still looking for one or two AVPs for the South Florida area. I need someone to cover the Miami area and another for around the Fort Lauderdale area. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact me.
AVP Gene Martine — King Orange International report
The 52nd King Orange International was held in Starke, Florida, January 14-15. Fliers came from:
- Maryland
- Pennsylvania
- Ohio
- Illinois
- Kentucky
- New Jersey
- Alabama
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Georgia
- Florida
Saturday morning was 49 degrees with the high in the low 50s. Winds were blowing around 25 mph with gusts to 30. Not great flying weather. The events for the day were Basic, Old-Time, Classic, and Profile Stunt. There were two or three crashes because of the wind and some of the guys passed on their flights, but most flew.
Members of Boy Scout Troop #70 served as runners and also worked the concession stand. They did a great job.
Sunday was a great day. The temperature started around 32 but quickly moved to the mid 60s. Winds were around 3-5 mph. Stunt heaven! Events were Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert Stunt. The perpetual trophy winner from the last King Orange International, Randy Smith, was there to defend his title, but lost it by a few points to Curt Contrata.
Everyone had a great time. Keep up the good work X-47!
