District V - 2006/08

Our first AMA District V Jamboree was held the weekend of June 3–4 in Mobile, Alabama. Joining me for this celebration were Associate Vice Presidents John Russell and Paul Verger.

Host club

The host club for this inaugural event was the Azalea City Model Aeronautics (ACMA) Club. With club president Andy Anderson and newsletter editor Frits Jetten leading the way, the club membership came out in force to make sure everyone had a great time.

Event highlights

We were treated to a noon full-scale aerobatics flight by a local pilot in his Christian Eagle biplane. The club spent many hours in preparation, and it showed.

Far more than 100 models and at least as many pilots created a long pit area with many nice models for the spectators to enjoy. While most models were RC, a nice group of CL modelers showed up and flew to the enjoyment of many.

Throughout the day, all types of models and modelers enjoyed a perfect weekend for flying. Types of aircraft seen included:

  • Radio-controlled (RC) models
  • Control-line (CL) models
  • Electric foamies
  • Sport planes
  • Giant Scale models
  • Helicopters
  • Turbine-engine jets
  • Full-scale aerobatics (Christian Eagle biplane)

Photography

Scott Critch from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, brought his aerial photography helicopter and took the great aerial shot.

Thanks

Thanks to ACMA for putting on a great event, and a special thanks to event coordinator Don Koval.
