With the fall comes cooler weather (I hope!), and that means great flying weather! As usual, District V is always busy with events.

My wife has had a recurrence of her breast cancer, so I have been busy at the hospital and helping her as best I can. Hopefully all will be well, and I’ll be back on the event trail in the fall.

Report: Owen Maupin, Associate Vice President

How about getting married at the flying field? What does a wedding have to do with RC airplanes? Everything when the couple getting married is David Payne and Kim Covey!

The wedding guest list read like a Who’s Who in the world of RC. There were people from Horizon Hobby, Team JR, Carden Aircraft, Extreme Flight RC, RC Groups, Hobby Lobby, and more.

A number of firefighters from the Chattanooga Fire Department were in the wedding. David has served as a full-time fireman for several years now but will be leaving the department to go to work for Horizon Hobby.

The wedding reception was held at the Chattanooga Radio Control Club. Good friends, good food, and great flying! Now that’s the kind of wedding reception we’re talking about.

We wish David and Kim all the best and thanks for letting us be a part of their big day!

Report: Dick Tonan — Volunteer State Model Aviators (VSMA) Fly-In

The Volunteer State Model Aviators (VSMA) Fly-In was held June 25, 2006, in Springfield, Tennessee. Tucked away in the rural area between Nashville and Clarksville is the home field for the VSMA. The field features a good-sized, well-groomed grass runway and plenty of shade for those hot Tennessee summer days.

While it’s important that a club have a good flying field to make an event successful, having a bunch of friendly and hospitable members is even more important — and this club has an abundance of them! Among the members are two of the friendliest people you’ll meet: Mike and Sally Stokes.

Mike is the president of the club and it’s evident that Sally provides him with great support. A unique feature of a VSMA event is that Sally cooks up a delicious batch of sausage with peppers and onions that certainly augments the standard fare of hot dogs and hamburgers. Assisting Sally at the grills during this event were member Pat Reese and Mike Stokes.

While this was a two-day event, a schedule conflict meant that I could only attend on Sunday. As you would expect, attendance was much greater on Saturday. One well-represented group on Sunday was the Cane Ridge Park contingent, who flew a good collection of Giant Scale models.

The VSMA club is a founding member of the new Middle Tennessee Radio Control Club Association. Their field will be the venue for the first-ever event this fall for the new association.

The six clubs will pitch in to make this a memorable event. Details will be announced soon. You don’t want to miss this one.
