As the summer heats up here in the Southeast, so does the flying! I have been busy attending events and meeting District V members. I am also managing to get in some R/C flying of my own every now and then.
Here are a couple of reports from Associate Vice Presidents Ron Van Putte and Roger Marshall.
Warbirds Over the Panhandle
On March 21 and 22, the Chipola R/C Aviators and the Giant Scale Warbirds Association sponsored the Warbirds Over the Panhandle Giant Scale Fly-In at the Chipola R/C Aviators’ flying field at the south end of the Marianna, Florida, airport.
The event was restricted to warbirds in military or civilian paint schemes. Monoplanes had to have at least an 80-inch wingspan and biplanes a minimum 60-inch wingspan. Especially impressive were a giant Fokker D.VII and a Nieuport 24. In addition, there was a pair of virtually identical Mitsubishi Zeros that were flown in tandem. There were also several beautiful P-47s in various sizes.
The CD was Dale Cavin, a local CPA and member of the Chipola R/C Aviators. — Ron Van Putte
Kershaw County Flyers Host Annual Spring Fly-In
The Kershaw County Flyers of Camden, South Carolina, hosted their annual Spring Fly-In on June 7, 2008, when the unusual 100° temperature made it seem like mid-August.
The small but enthusiastic group of pilots enjoyed perfect flying weather, although hot, with only a low breeze during the day. Orders for the day were lots of good flying, plenty of ice water and cold drinks, an all-you-can-eat lunch, pilots’ choice awards, and raffle prizes donated by area hobby stores.
- Best Civilian: Jim Malek of the Jackson Flyers Association for his Zenoah G-20-powered 1/4-scale Piper J-3; his one-wheel landings were awesome.
- Best Military: Don Sanquist of the Congaree Flyers for his fast-flying jet.
- Best Sport: Sue Adams of the Kershaw County Flyers for her hot pink MonoKote-covered trainer.
