THE JACKSON FLYERS Association
(JFA) hosted a fly-in on April 18, 2009. The
Jackson Flyers Association, one of the
oldest AMA chartered clubs in South
Carolina, welcomed 39 registered pilots to
the club’s flying site, deep in the piney
woods on the US Army’s Fort Jackson
Reservation in Columbia, South Carolina.
The club’s membership consists of both
active and retired military and public
members from the surrounding area. CD
Mike Gill and club president Jim Malek
were effective in keeping the flightline
filled, taking advantage of beautiful, sunny,
75° weather with only a mild breeze.
Models were simple trainers,
International Miniature Aerobatic Club
(IMAC) aerobats, helicopters, park flyers,
foamies, and several warbirds and civilian
scale aircraft.
JFA club president, Jim Malek, serves on the
buddy box with 11-year-old Evan Parry.
Young Evan flew his trainer aircraft very
well. Jim did well also.
Highlight of the day was Charles Wright
flying his Beechcraft D-18, powered by two
Zenoah G-38 engines, guided with a JR
spread spectrum radio. The US Army
considerately allowed the US Navy aircraft
on its reservation.
CD Mike Gill took time from his busy duties
to take a flight with his IMAC competition
model.
Eric Meyers with his Vibe-50 helicopter
powered with a YS-50 engine and guided by
a JR radio system. Eric has been a model
builder and flier for 45 years.
Report submitted by Roger Marshall,
AMA District V associate vice president
(AVP) in South Carolina.
The Sarasota R/C Squadron’s Annual Air
Fair was held May 2-3, 2009. Each year the
Golden Eagles International Miniature
Aircraft Association (IMAA) chapter of the
Sarasota club holds this annual event.
This year, more than 40 pilots attended
and entertained 200-300 spectators during the
successful two-day event. CDs Mike Winters
and Jon Hay hosted the Air Fair. The Civil
Air Patrol presented the colors to open the
festivities and Joe Fast sang the national
Anthem. The air was filled with all sorts of
large aircraft including military, civilian,
biplanes, multiengine aircraft, and even a
50% Super Decathlon!
The Runway Cafe served fare that was
nothing less than delicious including
hamburgers, hot dogs, and Italian sausage
with all the fixings. Former club president
Phil Bender was there to lend his support and
allowed me the pleasure of having a picture
taken with him. It is always a pleasure to see
the gang at Sarasota!
The activities were highlighted by a
flyover of a full-scale P-51D with wing
tanks.
If you enjoy big models, then Air Fair
2010 is not to be missed!
