Koast Air Fly-In — May 8, 2010

Associate Vice President Paul Verger sent this report.

May 8, 2010, marked the return of Koast Air of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the fly-in business. As some of you know, Koast Air was pretty much shut down due to conditions at the active landfill at which they fly. Thanks to the very hard work of Joe Krebs and others, Koast Air is back alive!

I’d like to thank the CD—wait, there was no CD! Koast Air doesn’t use one. Everyone in the club helps in whatever way they can.

Helpers and contributions:

  • Don Underwood: mowing
  • Dwayne Gonzales and Lee Carroll: weed eating and cleanup
  • Lou Porath: registration
  • Suellen (Paul Verger’s wife): arrangements and picking up fried chicken and side dishes
  • Charlie (Lou’s wife): serving and bringing free-range chicken deviled eggs
  • Lee Carroll: donuts for those with a sweet tooth

The field looked great. I would have liked a little less wind, but that’s been the story this whole spring. Everyone did get to fly anyway. The club was very happy with the big turnout they had. It was a great day!

There will be another in the fall. See you there.

CL Stunt National Winner

AVP Bob Dixon sent in this report.

Sam Neible won the Senior Division in CL Stunt at the Nationals in July. He is 15 years old and is from Tampa, Florida. Sam is the son of Brian and Debra Cook and was assisted by his grandfather, Wayne Smith, also from Tampa. Hats off to Sam for his great win at the Nats.

Tangerine Combat Classic

I attended the Tangerine Combat Classic, hosted by the Remote Control Association of Central Florida (RCACF), this past week and I had a ball! The temperature hovered in the three digits for the two-day event.

Chris Handegard did an outstanding job of running the gathering, pushing 10 rounds per class (3). That’s 30 rounds in two days. It was crazy but well worth it. The pilots were absolutely on their game and the RCACF workers were also on the ball.

The Radio Controlled Combat Association (RCCA), Combat’s Special Interest Group, is ever-growing and here in Florida we have some of the best Combat pilots in the country. Set up a Combat event at your club and watch the fun factor increase!

Closing: Safety and Outreach

I want to thank all of those dedicated AVPs and Leader Members in the district who make our sport fun and accessible to virtually anyone. Stay safe. By the time you read this, Hurricane Earl will have done its thing, but we won’t be out of the woods yet. Stay hydrated and keep building those great models. Don’t forget to introduce at least one youngster to the hobby this month. You’ll never regret it.
